DESCRIPTION
Are you a recent graduate looking for a great opportunity to get paid experience and hours towards your licensure as a MFT?
The City of Torrance is accepting applications for Juvenile Counseling Intern as a part of the Police Department's civilian Juvenile Diversion team.
We are seeking an energetic, self-driven individual who is looking to make a difference in the lives of local youth by assisting the Police Department diversion staff in the counseling of juveniles referred to the Diversion Program.
The Juvenile Counseling Intern will spend time in an office setting, as well as in the field, which will require driving their own vehicle.
The Juvenile Counseling Intern conducts interviews and reviews background questionnaires in evaluating referrals to the Juvenile Diversion Program; counsels juveniles and parents, together or separately for purposes of Intake and Evaluation and provides on-going individual, family or group counseling; and reviews juvenile investigation reports prepared by Patrol and Investigative personnel to determine the facts leading to the delinquent behavior of a juvenile.

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities required is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Possession of a master's degree in marriage, family, and child counseling, marital and family therapy, psychology, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or counseling with an emphasis in either marriage, family, and child counseling or marriage and family therapy, obtained from a school, college, or university accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.
AND
Registration as a marriage and family therapist intern.
OR
Verification of receipt of application provided by the Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Licenses and/or Certificates
Must possess a valid appropriate California driver's license.
Ideal Candidate
In addition to the above requirements, the most successful candidate will possess:- Experience counseling individuals, families, and groups.
- Experience in school based and/or at risk youth counseling.
- Experience in chaperoning youth on trips, excursions, or outings.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Good judgment and the ability to maintain calm in difficult situations.
- A team oriented attitude with a willingness to pitch in.
- Willingness to perform administrative duties.
- Willing to attend youth wilderness trips various times throughout the year.
Individuals currently registered as a marriage and family therapist intern with the Board of Behavioral Sciences are preferred.
Bilingual skills in Spanish and Korean is highly desirable.HOW TO APPLY & EXAM PROCESS
