Transit Bus Operator

Public Transportation Department: Part-Time position, no benefits.  $13.90 - $15.99 per hour.  Responsible for driving a transit bus; picking up and delivering passengers; collecting and accounting fares; operating a bus on designated route to daily schedule; operating two-way radio and reporting unusual traffic conditions, passenger emergencies or other problems; operating mobility device lift and securing mobility device. Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for transit operations to ensure passenger safety. Knowledge of City of Harrisonburg streets and medical facilities and thorough knowledge of traffic rules and regulations. Abilities to: operate busses and related equipment safely and efficiently; remain alert and calm during periods of stress and be courteous to riders and the general public.

Physical Requirements: This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.  Availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week is required.  Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred.

Special Requirements: Incumbent subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), a DMV driving record review and criminal background check.  Must pass a DOT physical examination as required by the U.S. DOT.  Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate CDL valid in the Commonwealth of VA required.
