The Metropolitan Council's Environmental Services (MCES) Division has 2 full- time vacancies for Electricians.  As assigned this position will require travel between various MCES facilities within the Twin Cities metro area.

Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) is an operating division of the Metropolitan Council. MCES operates and maintains the wastewater collection and treatment system for the Minneapolis-St. Paul seven-county metropolitan area, which includes approximately 600 miles of regional sanitary sewers and eight regional wastewater treatment plants. What you would do in this job:

  • Performs electrical work related to system process.
  • Maintains personnel protection system for fire, hydrogen sulfide and hydrocarbon alarm systems.
  • Engineers, designs and lays out electrical/electronic control circuits.
  • Performs electrical construction work. Verifies proper operation with collection/plant system processes. 
  • Troubleshoots and repairs a wide variety of electrical/electronic equipment including PLC, VFD, MCC, telemetry and SCADA systems.
  • Performs calibration and verification on various process instrumentation, metering and recording devices (pressure, level, flow, weight, etc.) 
  • Checks and maintains emergency service equipment. 
  • Coordinates inventory needs and stocking issues with procurement and warehouse staff. 
  • Completes job reports on labor and material. 
  • Works with maintenance management system (WAM), process control systems (Cimplicity/Wonderware), and other computer system software programs. 
  • Maintains monitoring systems at lift stations, meter sites, river quality monitoring, regulator and rain gauge sites. 
  • Diagnoses and repairs integration devices between field devices and process computers. 
  • Provides welding to support the electrical group. 
  • Tests, installs, and repairs sacrificial and rectifier-type cathodic protection systems.   
  • Performs other related duties.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications):

Completion of a registered apprenticeship electrical program through the State of Minnesota AND three (3) years of journey level experience that includes instrumentation, controls and programmable logic controller and programming (industrial experience).

License Requirements:

  • Completion of indentured apprentice electrical program
  • Current state of MN Class "A" journeyman electrician license
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
Desired: 
  • Completion of two-year vocational/technical program in construction electricity
  • Ability and or experience working with and alongside people from a diverse cultural and or racial backgrounds. 
  • Work experience in a wastewater treatment/collection system facility or other industrial setting
  • Current EPRI Instrumentation Certification or ISA CCST certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Work experience in a wastewater treatment/collection system facility or other industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of and experience in all aspects of assembling, installing, maintaining and testing electrical equipment and wiring systems in an industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of maintenance materials management software, process control software, and basic skill level with Word and email system.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Requires the skill to provide basic client services to the public and other agencies within the organization. Requires tact, courtesy and cooperation in dealings with others where the primary purpose is the exchange of information. 
  • Ability to work with other traders and crafts as a member of a composite crew.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Working Environment: Ability to work in all outdoor weather conditions. Ability to work in wastewater treatment plant facilities and collection sites including underground lift stations, meter vaults, sewers and control vaults. This position requires extensive travel within the seven-county metro area and driving between work sites.

Physical Requirements: Ability to work underground, in high or precarious positions, and in confined space. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders approximately 50% of the time. May be required to operate boom trucks and aerial equipment. Must have physical ability to perform work in awkward positions and cramped positions; requires crouching, kneeling and stooping for extended periods of time.  In addition, performs repetitive motions including bending, twisting, pushing and pulling.  Must have ability to work in noisy conditions and around equipment where odorous fumes, oil, grease and chemicals are present.
