ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Bridge to Success (BTS) program was created to further Contra Costa County's commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture. Positions in the Bridge to Success program are designated for individuals with developmental disabilities, who are provided the opportunity to obtain County employment through an alternative hiring process.  While such positions are not subject to examination, candidates are subject to a one-year job performance review period.

THE POSITION
Incumbents are assigned to this classification through the Bridge to Success Program. Employees in this position assist in cleaning and food preparation tasks in a County facility. Under general direction, employees in this position may perform a variety of duties such as:
 

  • Prepping and delivering food trays
  • Loading, unloading and cleaning food carts
  • Washing dishes, pots and kitchen utensils
  • Helping to set up and maintain employees' eating area
  • Maintaining cleanliness of different parts of the institution by sweeping, vacuuming and mopping, etc.

Typical Tasks

In Environmental Services:

  • Sweeps, wet mops and vacuums floors
  • Buffs floor using electrical buffing equipment
  • Washes and cleans face bowls, commodes, bath tubs and other bathroom fixtures
  • Replenishes paper towels, toilet tissue, soap and light bulbs
  • Dusts, cleans and disinfects all furniture, equipment, spot cleans and disinfects walls and woodwork
  • Cleans mirrors and light fixtures
  • Gathers soiled linen in assigned areas
  • Sorts, weighs and issues linen, bedding and clothing from the laundry locations
  • Conducts linen, clothing and equipment inventory at assigned locations
  • Moves and empties garbage cans
  • Moves furniture and equipment
  • Makes minor repairs on institutional equipment
  • Maintains materials used in institutional cleaning work

 

In Food Service:
  • Dishes up individual servings in kitchen or cafeteria lines
  • Weighs and measures food portions
  • Sets up patient food on the serving line, prepares diet nourishment and tube feeding mixtures
  • Transports food and utensils by pushing a cart from the kitchen to the various parts of the institution and returns to kitchen
  • Loads, unloads and cleans food carts
  • Washes dishes, pots and kitchen utensils by hand or by using mechanical equipment
  • Sets up and maintains employee dining room
  • Sweeps and mops kitchen floors and spot cleans walls
  • Operates simple vegetable peeling and slicing machines
  • Empties garbage
  • May be required to operate a cash register or deliver nourishment on a relief basis

At Juvenile Hall:
  • Takes inventory, prices and issues food to the kitchen
  • Monitors food tickets involved in the purchase of food
  • Ships and receives deliveries of food, supplies and equipment
  • Washes laundry
  • Sews and mends linen, bedding and clothing

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Either one (1) year full-time or its equivalent experience in the class of Institutional Services Aide in Contra Costa County or one (1) year of full-time or its equivalent institutional cleaning or food service experience.
 
Certificate: In order to be considered for a position through the Bridge to Success program, candidates must be in possession of a Disability Determination Form issued by the California State Department of Rehabilitation, which must be submitted along with an application. Failure to submit the Department of Rehabilitation Certificate will result in disqualification. 

Selection Process

APPLICATION PROCESS
Step One:  BTS Coordinator provides job announcements to Department of Rehabilitation and Community Based Organizations requesting that they identify any candidates who may meet the minimum qualifications.
 
Step Two:  Applicants will complete an online application and email it along with a Eligibility Determination Form from the Department of Rehabilitation to the BTS Coordinator prior to designated due date.
 
Step Three:  The BTS Coordinator will screen applications for minimum qualifications and eligibility for participation.
 
SELECTION PROCESS
Qualified applicants will be interviewed by the hiring department.  Candidates may utilize an advocate or job coach for the interview process if preferred.  Any accommodation requests from candidates will be handled in accordance with the County's ADA policy.
