Description

Summary Under supervision performs major and minor repairs to department and other County vehicles and power equipment.  Performs related duties as required.
 

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Outfits and maintains varied County vehicles and equipment; diagnoses vehicle and heavy equipment problems and performs major repairs to, but not limited to, clutch, water pump, fuel pump, cooling, ignition and electrical systems; greases and cleans equipment; checks fluids; makes vehicle safety checks and changes lights and tires; changes hoses, oil and filters, spark plugs, wires and related parts including valves, pistons, and main bearing assemblies; performs brake and radiator work; and repairs and overhauls engines, transmissions,  front and rear end assemblies, air compressors, hydraulic systems, and other specialized related equipment. 

Performs body work, including gas and electrical welding, painting and metal fabrication in completion of repair assignments.

Performs various automotive shop tasks and miscellaneous maintenance and custodial duties in and around the shops and buildings as required.

Maintains records and makes reports as required.

Performs highway maintenance tasks, including winter snow and ice removal, as necessary.  Subject to call at all times for winter snow and ice removal, and other emergency and non-emergency situations.

Education and/or Experience                                             
Associates Degree in a certified diesel and heavy equipment technician program; supplemented by two (2) to three (3) years of responsible work experience; one (1) or more years of experience working with computers and computer systems to set up functions, enter data, process information, and perform diagnostics; or equivalent combinations of education and experience. 

Two (2) to three (3) years of progressive mechanical repair experience with heavy equipment is desired. 

Language Skills                                           
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

Ability to effectively speak before and communicate with customers and County employees in need of service.

Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with co-workers, county officials and officers, and general public.

Mathematical Skills                                                 
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability                                                    
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Ability to work semi-independently making sound decisions using good judgment.

Computer Skills                                           
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software and ability to operate computerized controls.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Possession of a valid Wisconsin Driver's License and Commercial Driver's License Class A, B, C, D; endorsements N; and Air Brakes.

Current Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) certification as a Heavy Equipment Technician, Automotive Technician, or related areas is desired.

Other Skills and Abilities                                                    
Good knowledge of various makes of highway equipment, parts and components; and methods, tools, materials, and techniques used to successfully complete the maintenance and repair of automotive and diesel equipment.

Ability to successfully complete repair and maintenance work on heavy equipment.                     

Ability to trouble shoot, diagnose, repair, test and maintain a wide variety of automotive, diesel vehicles and equipment.  Ability to repair electrical, hydraulic and braking systems;
perform automotive body work, including gas and electrical welding, painting and metal fabrication; and perform gasoline and diesel engine overhaul and repair.

Ability to perform various automotive shop tasks and miscellaneous minor repairs.

Ability to operate or learn to operate heavy equipment, including, but not limited to:  large trucks and snow plows.

Good knowledge of and demonstrated ability to conform to goals, policies, procedures, and appropriate safety regulations of the Highway Department.

Ability to organize and maintain accurate and complete records and reports.

Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors.

Demonstrated reliability in attendance and flexibility to work long hours, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Other Qualifications
Ability to travel to and work in other counties as work demands dictate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.  The employee is frequently exposed to vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock. 

Safe work methods must be followed to insure the limited possibility of injury from moving parts and equipment while running and working on equipment.
