Summary of Job Duties
The City of Aurora is seeking two seasonal employees for the position of Shelter Aide. A Shelter Aide provides humane care, treatment and safe handling of animals in the shelter while performing a variety of animal care duties including, feeding, cleaning, grooming, exercising animals in the Animal Services Division of the Neighborhood Services Department.
Typical workweek hours will be about 20 hours/per week; rotating hours, holidays, and/or weekends may be required. This position is not benefit eligible at this time.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleaning and sanitation of kennels and other shelter areas
- Transporting of animals to various locations
- Provides humane care and treatment of animals in the shelter including feeding, grooming, and exercising
- Assist with the intake and kenneling of all incoming shelter animals
- Restrains animals for examination
- Serve as back-up adoption coordinator
- Perform other kennel/shelter and front desk duties as assigned
- Performs additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: At least 1 year of progressively responsible experience in the care and handling of animals. Prefer experience in an animal shelter or kennel environment. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
Knowledge: General knowledge of companion animal welfare, breeds, and species
Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and citizens; handle difficult or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; Ability to complete work without close supervision, provide humane care and treatment for a variety of animals; perform euthanasia; and operate a City vehicle.
Skills: Skill in handling animals; providing friendly service to customers; excellent interpersonal communication skills; high attention to detail.
Licenses, Certificates and/or Equipment Required: Colorado Driver's License with a good driving record. Candidates called for interviews must submit a recent copy of driving record. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.Working Conditions
Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 75 pounds with assistance; frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; regular walking and standing; a full range of body movements including bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, and crawling; foot/eye coordination to operate motor vehicle; Work performed in high noise level areas. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces.
Work Environment: Subject to animal bites or scratches; works primarily in an animal shelter with exposure to dust, noise, water, animal dangers, odors, and fumes; some work performed outdoors or offsite; able to work with rotating hours, holidays, weekends and a flexible schedule.
Equipment Used: Operates a motor vehicle; uses a variety of hand tools and equipment common to kennel operations.
