Description of Job

This position creates, preserves, enhances and develops land owned or managed by CPW using a variety of heavy equipment which includes backhoes, excavators, draglines, frontend loaders, dozers (D-6 or comparable), road graders and various other heavy equipment to create roads, parking lots, irrigation structures and other facilities for the public and CPW. This position performs habitat and trail enhancements by grading tails, inserting culverts, and other trail work as assigned.   Position ensures that equipment is transported throughout the area using semis, trailers, and pickups.  Specific duties include but may not be limited to:
  • Determines and operates heavy equipment to complete projects on a State Park. 
  • The position complies with permitting requirements for various projects which includes permits issued by local, state, federal agencies and other governments. 
  • Transports equipment by semi-tractor trailer from the regional storage compound to various project work sites throughout the State Forest State Park and is responsible for maintaining all applicable permits including Oversize or Wide Load permits and inspections in compliance with Motor Carrier Safety requirements and Department of Transportation requirements.
  • Examines and evaluates work site; determines feasibility and/ or obstacles; outlines time estimates and schedules while considering budget availability, seasonal weather conditions, and emergency repairs of facilities, habitat projects, permit timelines, and Regional priorities. 
  • This position works with numerous individuals within CPW  which may include but is not limited to District Wildlife Managers, Property Technicians, Park Managers, Engineers, Water Specialist, Biologists, and as well as other constituents.
  • Consistently assess and make necessary repairs to equipment or arrange for repairs as necessary.   Position works with diesel and gas engine repair determines when the scope of repairs is at a level which should be completed by service technician.
  • Assists with the purchases parts and/or tools in and ensures expenditures are within budget and maintains compliance CPW purchasing policies.
  • Submits activity reports and works with staff with regard to scheduling projects or any changes to scheduled projects.
  • Travel to projects and schedule smaller projects in close proximity at the same time.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Experience operating heavy equipment, experience must have included maintaining permits and licenses.
 
Necessary Special Requirements
A Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with proper endorsements is required for this position.

This position may be subject to a background check including a drug test.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be willing and able to travel with extended overnight travel.
  • Former employees of the State of Colorado MUST have concluded employment in good standing to be eligible for rehire.
  • Must be willing and able to be exposed to fuel and combustion of fuel.
  • Must be willing and able to be exposed to various and often extreme weather conditions (e.g., hot, cold, wet, humid or windy conditions). 
  • Must be willing and able to be exposed to shaking objects. surface or machinery.
  • Must be willing and able to comply with the Motor Carrier Safety requirements.
  • Must possess a valid and current Colorado driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in repairing heavy equipment.
  • Experience using an arc welder. 
  • Experience working within limited budgets
  • Ability to install water control devices
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on heavy equipment such as changing oil, replacing oil filters, greasing zerks and bearings
  • Ability to diagnose equipment issues and or failure
