The Department of Public Health, Animal Care & Control Division is recruiting for Animal Health Investigators who perform a variety of inspection and investigative functions in support of the County's animal regulation program.  Duties include: inspecting commercial establishments to determine whether animals are cared for in accordance with laws and regulations; conducting investigations of aggressive animal behavior, nuisance complaints, and reports of inhumane treatment of animals, improper shelter or sanitation; obtaining documents and other evidence, interviewing witnesses and other affected parties; writing reports and preparing cases for review by the District Attorney or other enforcement body; appearing in court to give evidence concerning violations of Federal, State and County codes and ordinances; and making both written and oral presentations to hearing bodies for the purpose of providing information, explaining regulations and representing the department.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
Travel/License:  Travel throughout the County is required. A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance are required and must be maintained throughout employment.
Background Investigation:  Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation.
Physical:  Must be able to lift and restrain small to very large animals, both domestic and wild, which may weigh up to 100 pounds.  May climb, crawl or squat during field investigations and while providing assistance in the field to animal control officers.
Euthanasia:  Must be able to perform euthanasia of sick, injured or unadopted impounded animals.  May be exposed to euthanasia and animal tranquilizer drugs.
Environmental:  Will be exposed to cleaning and disinfectant chemicals at commercial facilities and animal control shelters.
Training:  Within one (1) year of hire, must complete the following training courses:  a) Euthanasia, and b) Arrest and Firearms (Penal Code 832), which includes a physical agility test component.
Weather:  Incumbents must be able to perform duties in inclement weather.
Euthanasia:  Must be able to perform euthanasia of sick, injured or unadopted impounded animals.  May be exposed to euthanasia and animal tranquilizer drugs.
Environmental:  Will be exposed to cleaning and disinfectant chemicals at commercial facilities and animal control shelters.

Minimum Requirements

Experience:  Applicants must meet one (1) of the following options.
 

Option 1: Two (2) years (within the last 5 years)  of journey level experience enforcing animal related regulations as an Animal Control Officer in a public or private agency. Note: Experience as an Animal Control Officer Trainee is not considered qualifying experience, and must be listed separate from journey-level experience in the work history of the Application.
 
Substitution: Possession of a valid Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification issued by the State of California may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Note:  If applying under this substitution, indicate registration number on the Supplemental Questionnaire.
 
Option 2Two (2) years (within the last 5 years) of experience as a patrol officer in a public sector law enforcement agency.  Note: Experience as a security guard/officer is not considered qualifying experience.
