Description
The City of Laguna Beach Public Works Department is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated, Summer Bus Drivers. Under the direction of the Transit Supervisor, the Summer Bus Driver drives a bus or trolley on a set route for the duration of the summer festival season in Laguna Beach. We are currently recruiting for Bus Drivers to serve on a part-time basis during our Summer season (June 25 - September 2), but will also be continuing drivers on a year-round weekend basis as needed. This is a part-time position with varied hours up to 40 hours per week.

Qualified candidates will possess the following:- A valid California Class B driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements
- A School Bus Certificate or a Verification of Transit Training (VTT) document (can be obtained after hire)
- A current medical card
- An acceptable driving record
- Official Start of Summer: June 25, 2018
- Season Officially Concludes: September 2, 2018
- All prospective Summer Bus Drivers must successfully pass a police background check, D.O.T. pre-employment drug testing and two-year random testing history check. New drivers must also pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice.
- The appointing authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions.
Examples of Duties
Duties include following set procedures regarding vehicle inspection and preparation, transporting and assisting passengers as necessary and providing direction and assistance to the festival Trolley Steward. This position provides transportation to the disabled and those using wheelchairs. Also, keeps records of passenger tallies, answering questions relating to bus and trolley routes and festivals, and distributing festival information as needed. Bus and trolley drivers communicate over a two-way radio.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
- Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Experience:
- Bus Driver I: One full-time year bus driving experience with another municipal transit service, school bus service, private organization, or the equivalent;
- Bus Driver II: may occur after three seasons of employment with the City and satisfactory performance; or, applicants possessing at least two full-time years experience with another employer at time of hire may be appointed to Bus Driver II.
- License/Certificate Requirements:
- A valid California Class B driver's license with passenger and airbrake endorsements
- A School Bus Certificate or a Verification of Transit Training (VTT) document (can be obtained after hire)
- An acceptable driving record
- A current medical card
- DMV printout
- Current medical card
- Successfully pass a police background check. A fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre-placement medical exam and drug and alcohol test are also required.
Supplemental Information
Knowledge: the operation of municipal buses of varying size and capacity; of all applicable traffic laws and regulations; knowledge of principles and practices of customer service.
Abilities: work courteously and patiently with the public; analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; maintain an excellent driving record; maintain effective, cooperative relationships with co-workers and department supervisory staff; follow required procedures including the appropriate handling of cash and record keeping; follow verbal and written instructions and adhere to procedures and safe work practices; work scheduled hours, including evening shifts until midnight and weekends; which are subject to change with reasonable advanced notice, and be flexible in the event changes are required due to operational need.
