Under supervision performs work of routine difficulty providing for security, daily care and welfare of detainees in the Juvenile Detention facility; performs related work as assigned.

Typical Duties

(Illustrative Only)
• Communicates with parents, social agencies, service providers and co-workers as required
• Observes and records behavior, attitude and responses
• Interacts directly with juvenile detainees
• Maintains security of the juvenile detention facility
• Coordinates and controls the movement and activities of detainees
• Completes intake and release procedures as directed
• Enters data into computer related to youth detainees and runs reports
• Provides direction to detainees regarding behavior and discipline
• Counsels, disciplines and physically restrains youths as needed
• May conduct various programs with youth as directed
• Distributes medications
• Conducts inspections, security checks and searches
• Enters timely and accurate Juvenile On-line Tracking System (JOLTS) data and produces accurate court reports
• Transports or escorts juveniles to court

Essential functions of this position include: driving; standing and walking to supervise detainees; working with and around co-workers, juveniles and the public; dealing with interruptions; vision acuity near and far, hearing and speech for communicating with juveniles, staff and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D., a desire to work with juveniles in a residential setting and two years previous work experience in any industry; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum age 21. Must submit to background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility. Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within first 3 months on the job. Forty hours of orientation training is required within first month on the job. Must successfully complete an additional sixteen hours of COJET certified training each year thereafter.

Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to develop positive working relationships with detained delinquent boys and girls that have behavioral health issues; provide Positive Structure and Supervision; provide Positive Leadership and Care: model and teach Pro-social Skills to the youth that are housed in the living unit.
Preferred qualifications include experience working with youth; and/or residential treatment facility experience; and/or Coconino County Juvenile Court experience.

This position is safety sensitive.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.
