Job Summary

The Deputy Coroner-Trainee position is a part-time, hourly, entry level performing work at the discretion and direction of the Shelby County Coroner.  The position is part-time and works 29 hours or less per week.  Work involves investigating death scenes, photography, specimen collection, documentation, assisting with the removal of deceased, working with outside agencies and next of kin notifications. This position is required to be on the night and weekend on-call rotation. On the job training is provided by the Coroner or the Senior Deputy Coroner.

Qualifications and Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High diploma for a state accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent from a state certified program.  In the State of Alabama a Certificate of Attendance does not constitute a high school diploma.  If you indicate on your application that you have a high school diploma and it is determined that you don't, your application will automatically be disqualified.
  • Experience with computers.
  • Statues require that all Deputy Coroner's be at least 25 years of age and a resident of Shelby County, Alabama for at least one year prior to hire.
  • Medical background (EMT or Nursing) or education that includes successful completion of Human Anatomy and Physiology courses.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours.Willing and able to work night and weekend on-call rotation.
  • Perform all Physical Requirements as listed below.

 PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Criminal Justice background
  • Medical or Legal Death Investigator background.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an indoor office environment and outdoors in extreme weather conditions, unsanitary and bio-hazard conditions and in stressful and sometimes hostile conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is medium to heavy in nature and consists of walking, bending, lifting, carrying and driving. Required to assist with lifting human remains.

EXAMINATIONS
No written or performance examination will be required for this position. If you should fail the drug screen you will be in violation of the Shelby County Drug and Alcohol policy and you will be subject to immediate dismissal.
