DEFINITION

The Redondo Beach Fire Department invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.

The City of Redondo Beach Fire Department proudly serves from three Fire Stations strategically located throughout the city. In addition to firefighting, the Department cross-trains to provide special services such as emergency medical care, hazardous materials management, and special rescue operations. The Department maintains a daily staffing of two dedicated paramedic units, three fire engines, a 100' ladder truck, a fire boat, and a Fire Division Chief. Under the direction of the Fire Chief and supervisors, the Firefighter/Paramedic position is accountable for performing specified duties, responsibilities, tasks, and assignments of Fire Department operations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

The position is accountable to respond as a team member on an assigned fire company following a supervisor's direction to conduct emergency medical, rescue and non-emergency operations including but not limited to:

  • Organizing and managing difficult emergency situations; working effectively in hazardous environments; performing standard firefighting procedures in laying hose, setting ladders and performing rescue, ventilation, salvage and cleanup functions; participating in all phases of fire department activities including fire suppression activities, using and operating special equipment, safety, hazardous materials abatement, medical aid response and fire prevention; conducting fire prevention inspections; and wildland fire response activities
  • Performing at medical and fire environmental emergencies administering advanced emergency medical care to the sick and injured; communicating medical information to the hospital; documenting emergency care rendered; operating within strict State, County and City regulations and guidelines; attending department and hospital training sessions and maintaining an individual paramedic license; performing control and responsibility of the patient until appropriately released; diagnosing emergency medical problems and performing the appropriate intervention; recording information related to responses; and giving and following oral and written instructions
  • Supervising, instructing and evaluating the performance of paramedic trainees; providing on-the-job training; and, providing emergency medical procedures training to other employees
  • Participating and assisting in planning of drills and other training activities to learn and improve emergency response tactics
  • Participating in evaluating new equipment and procedures; tracking work assignments; writing detailed reports; making presentations
  • Driving department emergency vehicles and performing inventory and maintenance
  • Delivering outstanding internal and external customer service solving problems and communicating effectively with the public and fellow employees
  • Participating in routine non-emergency activities such as fire prevention inspections, code enforcement, hydrant maintenance and district familiarization
  • Performing routine in-station activities such as station housekeeping, equipment cleaning and maintenance
  • Participating in physical fitness programs
  • Using City equipment, time, money and resources judiciously, safely and as authorized
  • Performing public education activities and carrying out positive public relations

Minimum Qualifications to Apply:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Minimum of 18 years of age at time of appointment
  • Demonstrated ability to swim
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" or Class "3" California Driver License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles (at time of appointment)
    • Required possession of a valid Class "B" (firefighter restrictive), or a Class "C" with Firefighter Endorsement California Driver License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles within 12 months of appointment
  • Graduation from a California State certified Firefighter I Academy
    • Note: Certification as a Firefighter I from the California State Fire Marshal is highly desirable
  • Current paramedic license (California applicants) and/or registration with the National Registry of EMTs (out-of-state applicants)
    • Note: Attainment of Los Angeles County paramedic accreditation within 90 days of employment is required.

Highly desirable qualifications include:
  • Full-time firefighter experience, EMT-1 Ambulance and/or EMT-P experience
  • Hazardous materials technician certification
  • Possession of an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

TESTING PROCESS:
Qualified candidates will complete the computer-based Firefighter Test through the National Testing Network. Candidates must successfully complete the National Testing Network Exam before the required deadline to be considered for the remainder of the recruitment process.

Candidates are required to pass all phases of the recruitment process prior to being placed on the Eligible List. Only the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process.

SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process may include but is not limited to: application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview. All employment offers made by the City are contingent upon establishing proof of a prospective candidate's legal authorization to work in the United States and successfully passing all components of the pre-employment process, such as: reference check, background investigation, fingerprint criminal history check, post-offer drug test, post-offer psychological and post-offer medical examination, the cost of which will be borne by the City.
