Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation, Parks, and Open Space, Division of Aquatics & Recreational Water Activities is currently seeking an experienced Lifeguard to ensure a safe swimming environment for aquatic facility patrons at assigned swimming pools and open water facilities. The Lifeguard will be responsible for teaching water safety, instructing water fitness classes and teaching all levels of American Red Cross learn-to-swim classes, as well as facilitating other aquatic related programming.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:
  • Ensures the safety of swimmers and facility patrons by using American Red Cross Lifeguarding standards.
  • Promotes facility safety and enforces safety rules.
  • Ensures the safe use of the facility, beach or waterfront as well as site specific equipment.
  • Utilizes preventative lifeguarding skills and performs water rescues according to training standard.
  • Administers first aid, CPR, defibrillation and oxygen according to division standard of care.
  • Teaches swimming lessons, water fitness classes and other related programs if applicable.
  • Assists in managing facility operations including testing of pool chemistry, cleaning duties, maintenance, and required to perform shift leader duties when directed.
  • Performs pool reception duties, program promotions and registration as required.
  • Follows management directives and complies with standards of operation as required by management.

Education/Experience

Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

No experience required.

One year of Lifeguarding experience preferred. 
Experience instructing swim classes preferred.
One season or year as a certified lifeguard preferred.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training required. 
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred.
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications or equivalent required.
  •  Valid driver's license depending upon assignment.

    If you are hired October 5, 2010 or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.  This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
