Description

Under little or no supervision, performs or assists in a wide variety of municipal sewer, water and drainage system installation, maintenance and repair functions using motorized equipment, hand and power tools in a manner which will ensure safe, economical, effective and timely results.

2018 Wages:  $12.97-$16.34, DOQ (pending contract settlement)
 

Essential Functions

Conducts various preventative maintenance activities on municipal water system.

  • Flushes City water mains
  • Locates curb stop shut-off valves
  • Exercises valves
  • Maintains appropriate records relating to each program
  • Operates, maintains and repairs Fire Hydrants
  • Locates water main and valves as called for on locate tickets
 

Completes or assists in water distribution system repair and replacement.

  • Repairs or replaces water main as appropriate.
  • Repairs roadways and landscape from water main and service repairs
 

Performs preventative maintenance functions on sanitary sewer system.

  • Operates or assists in the operation of sewer cleaning equipment, such as sewer jet, vector or other related equipment.
  • Checks lift stations for malfunctions and appropriate operation.
  • Locates sewer mains and services laterals as called for on locate tickets
  • Maintains appropriate records relating to each program.
 

Completes or assists in sanitary sewer repair and replacement.

  • Repairs lift stations as authorized.
  • Cleans and repairs manholes.

Responds to customer service requests and system malfunction alarms.
  • Responds to customer questions regarding both sewer and water.
  • Investigates the nature and source of problem.
  • Attempts to identify corrective means needed.
  • Determines appropriate party to make corrections, if necessary.
  • Prepares and submits necessary records to supervisor.
 

Performs storm sewer/storm water drainage way maintenance, repair and installations.

  • Inspects culverts, catch basins and ditches to ascertain the necessity of maintenance or repair.
  • Rebuilds catch basins, manholes in various degrees as necessary.
  • Removes and replaces concrete curb and gutter.
  • Identify, analyze and correct drainage deficiencies.

Equipment uses and operations.
  • Performs pre-operation checks including, but not limited to fluid levels, lights, tires.
  • Ensures cleanliness of equipment inside and out during and after use.
  • Puts equipment away cleaned and ready for next use.
  • Reports all equipment maintenance needs using "Vehicle Repair Order" to equipment supervisor or immediate supervisor.
  • Reports all equipment damage and accident to supervisor immediately.
  • Makes minor equipment repairs and adjustments as capable or as assigned.
 

Keeps supervisor promptly informed of all significant matters he/she must know to perform his/her position responsibilities effectively.
 

Performs or assists in other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Must have a current valid Minnesota Class "B" driver's license. Tanker endorsement preferred, but not required.
  • Must have some knowledge and/or experience in sewer and water maintenance related areas.
  • Must have a good knowledge of and be experienced in working with motorized equipment.
  • Must have physical strength sufficient to perform strenuous labor tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Must have and demonstrate an ability to make sound independent decisions and judgments on projects assigned.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in general maintenance work and skill in operating hand, power and mobile equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Works overtime and/or varying shifts to meet public service needs.
  • Must have an ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, as well as to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Prefer Class "SD" sanitary sewer collection certificate.
  • Prefer Class "C" water plant operations certificate.
