Position Summary

Position is responsible for implementing the Community Violence Reduction program for the City of Indianapolis. The Director serves as a bridge between community groups, law enforcement, and other organizations focused on reducing and preventing violence in Marion County. The Director coordinates data collection and evaluation of the programs receiving funding from the City; and works to ensure accurate reporting from community partners. The Director represents the City and Office of Public Health and Safety at meetings and community events with a specific focus on crime prevention. The Director manages the Peacemakers, who report to the Director. The Director reports to the Deputy Director and Director of the Office of Public Health and Safety.

Position Responsibilities

Serve as a bridge between community stakeholders, organizations, neighborhoods, and IMPD.

Collaborate with community agencies, neighborhood groups and faith-based organizations to develop community-based strategies to violence reduction in Indianapolis.

Facilitate collaboration between public health and public safety entities, including data sharing, joint initiatives, and policy considerations.

Develop metrics to evaluate outcomes of the community intervention component of the Indianapolis Violence Reduction Program.

Pursue outside funding sources to support innovative program activities focused on decreasing violence in Marion County.

Manage and direct Peacemakers to provide day to day operational assistance to neighborhoods and community groups engaged in violence prevention.

Develop and implement methods to consistently and effectively communicate.

Prepare and disseminate fact sheets/briefs and updates on community intervention.

Attend and participate in community and neighborhood meetings as a representative of the City and OPHS with the purpose of understanding and contributing to critical policy discussions centered on violence reduction.

Provide technical assistance to community groups implementing evidenced based programming targeting violence reduction and prevention.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a social science, social work, nursing, or some other health care field, or criminal justice field with two (2) to three (3) years' experience in program development and evaluation. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication. Ability to provide leadership to community groups and manage individuals. Knowledge of local social service providers, community agencies, neighborhood groups and faith-based agencies. Interpersonal communications, tact and diplomatic acumen to effectively represent the City of Indianapolis. Ability to work independently and to identify, design and/or recommend solutions to needs, issues, and/or problems in the position's areas of responsibility. Ability to prioritize and multi-task. Knowledge of computer/software technology. Experience and ability with public speaking and communication at meetings and conferences, with a diversity of audiences and people. Research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skills to correctly identify real and potential problems, advise management as required, and propose effective strategic resolutions. Skilled in project management, including meeting deadlines and completing tasks on time, and as requested

Preferred:

• Master's Degree in social work, criminal justice, public affairs, or other advanced degree;

• Five (5) or more years' experience in violence intervention and prevention

• Three (3) or more years' experience in program development and evaluation

Independent Judgment

Independent judgment is regularly utilized when there are no available policies and procedures. Errors in judgment may cause inconsistencies and inconveniences that are highly visible to the Department and the public.
