Primary Objective
Under minimal direction, performs routine nursery, plant propagation, landscape, and forestry tasks consistent with established natural resource management standards.
As a temporary maintenance position, employment shall not exceed 26 weeks in a calendar year. Temporary maintenance employees are members of the Maintenance Collective Bargaining Unit.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs nursery, plant propagation, landscape, and reforestation maintenance functions, including animal damage prevention, soil enhancement, seed collection and cleaning, watering, weed control, pruning, mulching, fertilizing, harvesting, and plant health care related tasks consistent with established horticultural standards.
Applies pesticides, by hand, in a safe and effective manner.
Operates a variety of noncommercial driver's license equipment and power equipment such as pickup trucks, dump trucks, cargo van, tractors, skid steers, utility vehicles, chain saws, weed whips, mowers, and nursery cultivation equipment.
Maintains District Nursery facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition.
May provide limited work direction to seasonal or contracted staff on routine maintenance tasks as required.
Performs other related duties as apparent or assigned. Qualifications
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: At least 18 years of age. Valid Class D Minnesota Driver's License upon appointment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to maintain records and complete report forms in detail. Ability to follow oral and written directions.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of plant materials and horticultural practices, turf, and grounds maintenance procedures, equipment operation, basic hand tools, and building cleaning procedures.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk on uneven and rough terrain as well as paved and unpaved trails; use hands and arms to handle and manipulate objects, tools, or controls; and operate foot controls on equipment. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. When operating equipment, the employee is frequently exposed to bouncing, jostling, twisting, and turning of upper body. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, drive belts, blades, and gears. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions year-round with regular exposure to cold often below zero degrees and low wind chill. Conversely, summer conditions are often hot and humid with exposure to dust, pollen, and equipment exhaust fumes. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee maybe exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and some risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.
