Description

These are seasonal positions starting immediately and ending as late as December. Most crews work 7:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Hours could vary based on weather and department needs. Depending on crew assignment, weekend work may be required. Please review the supplemental questions for specific scheduling requirements for each crew.

This classification consists of entry-level unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance of Broomfield's undeveloped and developed park areas.

Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

(Persons hired in this position must be able to perform all the essential tasks required by the position.  The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required.  The City and County of Broomfield retains the right to modify or change the duties or essential and additional functions of the job at any time, without notice.)

General:

Park Maintenance – Assists in the preparation, development and maintenance of park areas.  Assists in the preparation of baseball and softball fields including picking up trash in the dugouts, sweeping or using a gas powered blower to clean the dugouts, emptying trash cans, hand dragging or dragging the fields using a golf cart, chalking the fields, raking the mounds or home plate areas and occasionally replacing the base receptacles.  Assists in the maintenance of soccer fields or football fields including marking and lining the fields and occasionally moving the soccer goals either manually or with the assistance of a tractor.  Assists in the installation and repair of all park structures.  Performs safety inspections and repairs to playgrounds and playground equipment including repairing and painting picnic tables, park benches etc.  Maintains and cleans outdoor shelters and restroom facilities and removes trash.  Assists with horticultural activities including planting and weeding flower beds, planting and pruning trees, removing or replacing tree posts, tree/limb removal, chipping limbs, planting and maintaining shrubs, spraying herbicides and pesticides, picking up trash and landscape construction.  Assists in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems including manual digging of trenches, etc.  Assists in the preparation, development and maintenance of all park sites and street right of ways and open space by using string trimmers, edgers, and hand mowers; may receive training in the operation of riding mowers.  Assists with equipment service and maintenance.  Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.  Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to appropriate division; cleans equipment.  Cleans shop area.  Assists in the set-up of special events.  Performs trash removal from park areas.  May also be required to assist with snow removal and hanging holiday decorations.  Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.  Operates construction and maintenance equipment such as pick-up trucks, tractors, front-loaders, dump trucks, mowers, trimmers, edgers, box scrapers, tillers, aerators, snow blowers, sprayers, spreaders, wheelbarrows, hand tools and pruning tools.  Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning the upper body, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects, walking; and standing.  The incumbent must also be alert to peripheral activities when operating equipment and, therefore, must have a full range of movement in the neck and shoulders.

Administrative Duties: 
The incumbent is responsible for effectively managing his or her workload to achieve departmental goals.  Assures that responsibilities are performed in compliance with federal and state regulations, Broomfield policies and procedures and the Broomfield Municipal Code.  Maintains confidentiality of information consistent with applicable federal, state and county rules and regulations.  The incumbent may confer with employees, supervisory, and administrative personnel regarding departmental policies and procedures.  Is responsible for maintaining daily maintenance logs of work completed and reporting time worked on bi-weekly timesheets.  The incumbent assists in recommending and implementing modifications to systems, policies and procedures.  May conduct studies, analyses, and research on a wide variety of topics. 

Budget/Resource Management: 
The incumbent is responsible for partnering with other staff members in planning, developing, and implementing the overall vision, mission, programs, processes and projects of the department. 

Public Relations/Communication: 
The incumbent meets and confers with customers to explain departmental plans, programs, functions, policies, and procedures.  Assists departmental staff in preparing and coordinating reports as required.  Answers inquiry/complaints and communicates with customers.  Attends meetings, workshops, and conventions as necessary for the maintenance of effective services. 

Miscellaneous Duties: 
The incumbent keeps operational records and makes required reports.  Operates a personal computer including associated software programs.  Operates a motor vehicle in traveling to and from work sites.  Assures that facilities and equipment are maintained properly and coordinate maintenance and repair functions.  Evaluates service costs and makes related recommendations.  Identifies and recommends improvements in departmental operations to ensure assigned functions are efficient and cost effective.  Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.  Uses all required safety equipment.  Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training - Completion of 8th grade.

Experience - None.

Necessary Special Requirements - Must be at least 18 years of age.  A valid driver's license and safe driving record is preferred, but not required, for more assignments. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes such as oral board, reference checks, driving record check through DMV, criminal background check and sex-offender registry check, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.

Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those the worker encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some weekend and holiday work required.  Some positions do require weekend work as part of normal schedule.  Travel by truck is required to reach work sites.  The noise level in the environment is usually loud.   The incumbent may be exposed to the following environmental factors:  work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; work near fumes or airborne particles; work in or near moving traffic; work with toxic or caustic chemicals and bloodborne pathogens; outdoor weather conditions; and vibration.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.  While performing the duties of a Seasonal Laborer, the employee may be is frequently required to talk or hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend or twist from the upper body; squat; use hands and/or feet to perform manual tasks such as digging; push or pull; reach with hands and arms; sit; stoop; kneel; climb; balance; crouch; or crawl.  Performance of duties for this position requires a wide range of physical movements.  Physical demands are described as heavy (exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects) to very heavy (exert over 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 100 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force constantly to move objects).  Some of these positions require the ability to smell.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and peripheral vision.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
