Nebraska State Troopers are sworn state deputy sheriffs and are authorized to perform police services in all of Nebraska's 93 counties. The Nebraska State Patrol is committed to professional public service reflecting recognition of the inherent value of each individual in society. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: State Troopers have a wide variety of law enforcement career opportunities for those officers with two or more years of service including: SWAT; Accident Reconstruction; Executive Protection; Police Service Dogs; Bomb Technician; Aviation Support; Training Academy; Criminal and Drug Investigations; and Hazardous Materials Response.

Salary:  $16.58 per hour during camp; $46,092 upon graduation.

Location:  Basic Recruit Training-Grand Island. The following duty stations are available to the recruits of Camp 59: Bridgeport, David City, Grand Island, Hebron, Lincoln, McCook, Nebraska City, Ogallala, Omaha, Sidney, South Sioux City, Wahoo, and West Point. Duty station assignment requests by the recruits will be considered and determined in the final stages of basic recruit camp. Additional duty stations may also become available and offered to Recruit Camp 59.

Examples of Work

The Basic Recruit Camp is a resident 25* week course with an intense paramilitary structured learning arena where the fundamentals of being a Trooper are taught. Core learning areas include academics, physical fitness, firearms training, vehicle operations, defensive tactics, commercial motor vehicle training, accident investigation, patrolling, building search, and Nebraska law and courtroom procedures. Upon graduation, Trooper duties begin in the Traffic Services or Carrier Enforcement Divisions and include taking appropriate enforcement action of any violation of the law committed in their presence and working with communities to improve public safety. Traffic (Patrol) Services Division duties include, enforcing traffic and drug laws, and investigating crimes. Carrier Enforcement Division duties primarily focus on the laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of commercial motor vehicles (trucks & buses), by weighing and conducting roadside inspections of such vehicles. (*23 weeks of training over 25 week time period).

Requirements are set by State statutes and Chapter 8 of Nebraska Crime Commission on Law Enforcement rules and regulations. Requirements include: Be 21 years of age on or before the oath of office is taken and be a U.S. Citizen prior to the oath of office is taken; must have high school diploma or GED; must have the ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language at the eleventh grade level as demonstrated by the Test of Adult Basic Education; good physical condition with the ability to complete and pass a physical abilities test; possess sufficient vision and hearing to perform the essential functions of a sworn officer; possess good character (does not have a past indicative of incompetence or neglect of duty and does not have a past indicative of physical, mental, or emotional incapacity) and high moral standards as determined by a thorough background investigation and be fingerprinted to permit search for and disclosure of any criminal record; hold a valid motor vehicle operator's license be free of a conviction of a domestic violence crime that disqualifies them from possessing a firearm; free of any felony convictions or free of any conviction of physical violence constituting a Class I misdemeanor in Nebraska; must not have been subject to punitive discharge from U.S. Armed Forces; has not been convicted of any crime involving the threat of or actual sexual assault or abuse; has not been convicted of any crime of physical violence or sexual abuse against a child or children; not have been convicted of DUI two years prior to camp start date; cannot have used marijuana within the last two years from date of application; not have illegally sold, produced, cultivated or transported marijuana or other controlled substance for sale; not have used marijuana or other controlled substance, other than one prescribed by a physician, while employed or appointed as a peace officer or law enforcement officer; cannot have used illicit drugs within the last five years from date of application; applicants who receive conditional offers of employment must complete a medical examination, psychological examination, and polygraph examination.

OTHER: Applicants cannot maintain a continuous association or dealings with persons, groups, or organizations that they know, or should know are persons or groups or organizations under criminal investigation or indictment or who have a reputation for present, ongoing involvement in felonious or criminal behavior.

The Nebraska State Patrol will conduct a complete and through background investigation on each applicant that moves forward in the process. Applicant should begin gathering copies of the following for the Background Investigator. 1. A photocopy of your birth certificate. 2. A photocopy of your driver's license. 3. A copy of DD214 military records (if applicable) 4. A copy of your high school diploma or GED certificate 5. Copies of your college transcript or diploma. (if applicable) 6. Naturalization forms, if applicable.
