Job Description


Please note: Returning Gatekeeper will receive $9.75(2nd year), $10.00(3rd year), and $10.25(4th year).
 

Under the supervision of a Parks Supervisor, this person opens and closes gates at specified County Parks. Includes routine cleaning of facilities, trash pickup and reservation preparation and clean up. This position is a part-time, non-benefited, position not to exceed 1,000 working hours a year.

Gates are to be opened at 7:00 am and closed at 8:00 pm in the winter and 10:00 pm the rest of the year unless otherwise specified. Although substitutes are occasionally available, this position is a 365 day a year commitment. Duties are typically performed during the early morning hours and/or late evening hours, including holidays. Some work may be performed when dark outside.

Essential Job Functions

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Opens the building and/or grounds and monitors events for groups.
  2. Provides general labor required for the cleaning of public areas, restrooms, hallways, kitchen areas, grills, and fireplace(s) in assigned facilities.
  3. Washes interior and exterior surfaces of windows.
  4. Unplug drains, toilets and other plumbing fixtures, and contains and cleans up sewage overflows from restrooms.
  5. Changes light bulbs.
  6. Removes snow and ice from walkways, stairs, and access ways.
  7. Removes trash and recyclables from buildings and/or grounds to external collection containers.
  8. Sets up and tears down rental areas for specific uses and events.
  9. Performs minor building repairs as needed to restroom fixtures, displays, furniture, shelves, etc.
  10. Responds to specific requests by park patrons.
  11. Performs other functions as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

Must be 18 years of age. High school education or GED preferred. Must be capable of following verbal and written instructions.

Additional Requirements and Information

The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills: 

  • Use of proper chemicals and supplies for ensuring the building maintenance is maintained.
  • Reading proficiency in order to read and comprehend written instructions, labels on cleaning compounds, MSDS data sheets and other notices.
  • General mathematical skills in order to mix cleaning chemicals and compounds in proper proportions and calculate required quantities of replacement supplies.
  • Knowledge of safety and blood borne pathogen protocols.
  • Commitment to provide quality customer service to the users of County facilities and parks.
  • Ability to interact positively and constructively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and members of the general public with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Performs all work and enforces all park rules in accordance with established safety protocols and procedures.
Physical requirements:
  • Must possess sufficient mobility with or without assistive devices to access all natural features,structures, and facilities in parks.
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to identify spills and stains requiring cleaning and/or disinfecting.
  • Must be able to descend and ascend from floor and ground level.
  • Must be able to work with arms extended above shoulder level to replace light fixtures and other features, fixtures and furnishings.
  • Must be able to ascend/descend stepladders in order to access features and fixtures located at heights that cannot be reached while standing on the floor.
  • Must have sufficient strength to remove snow from walkways and other areas with manual shovels and snow blowers.
  • Must be able to lift and move supplies weighing up to 50 lbs with or without mechanical or other assistance.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, mold, mildew and human wastes, as well as inclement weather.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to custodial cleaning products.
  • Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.

Licenses and certifications:
Valid Michigan driver's license.

Working Conditions:
  • While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to solvents,detergents, disinfectants; other cleaning compounds; mold, dust, dirt and human wastes; inclement weather, including extreme temperatures (wind, rain and snow); noise; and other hazards.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other disease vectors is also possible.
  • Duties are typically performed during the early morning hours and/or late evening hours, including holidays. Some work may be performed when dark outside.
