Description
- The City of Norfolk is looking for candidates who are interested in serving their community while earning extra income as a School Crossing Guard for the 2017/18 school year. This position ensures the safe crossing of school children at designated crossing sections at the beginning and end of each school day.
Essential Functions
- ***THERE ARE CURRENTLY SEVERAL VACANCIES***
***The starting hourly rate is $12.00/hour***
The duties include, but are not limited to the following:- Gathers and controls children at crossing sections.
- Signals traffic to stop or proceed to allow for the safe crossing of children.
- Must be able to see and hear traffic, observe the color changes of signal lights and judge the distance and safe speed of vehicles in order to allow safe stopping distance.
- Identifies and reports unsafe conditions or illegal activities at or near assigned locations.
- Communicates safety instructions and directions to students, parents, and motorist traveling through the school zone.
Qualifications:- Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly and courteously.
- Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddles STOP message during the entire crossing movement.
- Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injuries.
- Must be able to stand for up to 60 minutes at a time.
- Must be able to walk and go up and down a curb/sidewalk.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be able to work in adverse conditions such as inclement weather and close to traffic.
- Must have good mental alertness, a neat appearance, good character, be dependable and have an overall sense of responsibility for the safety of the students.
Education/Experience
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and any combination of training and experience to maintain order and safe conditions for school students at assigned street crossings.
Additional Information & Requirements
- Location: Homeland Security Traffic Unit - assigned to school crossing corners as needed.
One (1) of (3) three shift assignments available:
Monday-Friday:
Shift One (1): 7:30 am to 8:30 am and 2:30 pm to 3:15 pm
Shift Two (2): 8:10 am to 9:20 am and 3:05 pm to 3:50 pm
Shift Three (3): 8:45 am to 9:45 am and 3:40 pm to 3:50 pm

- Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010 or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
