Job Description
Returning Grounds Attendant receive $11.25 (2nd year), $11.50 (3rd year), and $11.75 (4th year).The position reports to the Park Operations Center (POC) in West Olive, MI and travels to various county parks and locations. The position will work forty (40) hours/week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with weekends off. Position begins work late April and works through early September (Labor Day). Must be available for day, weekend and possibly holiday duty.
The ideal candidate will have experience with a wide variety of maintenance, including but not limited to: painting, tree and shrub trimming, landscaping, building and grounds, site inspection, repair and carpentry. Capable of operating various power tools including saws, drills, sanders, etc. Must be willing to learn new skills, have a desire to achieve high standards and work independently.
Essential Job Functions
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operates a variety of commercial mowers, edgers, and other turf and grass maintenance equipment.
- Operates landscaping machinery as needed including tractors, chippers, and other equipment.
- Trims trees, removes downed trees, and chips accumulated brush.
- Checks and/or change fluids and filters; lubricates moving mechanical parts; checks batteries, tire pressure and tread wear; and performs other preventative maintenance for park vehicles and equipment.
- Performs trail maintenance including surface maintenance and tree trimming/removal.
- Paints buildings, various park fixtures, and signs.
- Inspects and identifies repair or replacement of damaged, deteriorated or obsolete signage, structures, features, landscape forms, and park fixtures.
- Purchases materials and supplies for repairs and improvements, using Parks funds.
- Operates a variety of power tools such as saws, drills, sanders, routers, etc. for repair and improvement of park facilities.
- Transports equipment from park site to park site.
- Performs other functions as assigned.
Required Education, Training and Experience
Must be 18 years of age or older. High school diploma or GED, or currently enrolled in high school, is preferred but not required. A valid Michigan driver's license is required.
Additional Requirements and Information
The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:
- Working knowledge of the maintenance construction trades, including painting, carpentry, electrical and electronic repair, plumbing, etc.
- Working knowledge of grounds maintenance.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and practices.
- Working knowledge of the proper use of manual and power tools commonly used in the maintenance construction trade.
- Ability to layout work efficiently so as to minimize man-hours and materials required to properly complete work.
- Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA occupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements, and of safety protocols and practices.
- Ability to interact positively and constructively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and members of the general public with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
