Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking Seasonal Lifeguards for the Beach Safety Division. This is an unclassified position located at various beach locations throughout Volusia County, and will be responsible for providing skilled beach safety work in preventing injuries or deaths in a County swimming area.

Note: Lifeguard is a seasonal, part-time, temporary appointment.

Illustrative Duties

(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.
  • Maintains order and discipline among swimmers and other persons at an assigned County swimming area.
  • Rescues swimmers in distress.
  • Applies resuscitation and administers medical aid when necessary.
  • Assists in maintaining general appearance and cleanliness in area when able to do so without distraction from lifesaving.
  • Reports Habitat Conservation Zone violations in area when able to do so without distraction from lifesaving.
  • Must be willing to relocate to other county locations based on operational needs.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, and Local ordinances.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

**NOTE: This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.

Successful completion of recruit class held by Volusia County Beach Safety. Certified as an Emergency Medical Responder/First Responder. Must meet all physical and performance requirements established by the County. Must annually or at the request of the Beach Safety Director meet the physical ability requirement of a 500-meter swim of a measured course in under ten (10) minutes. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license at the time of hire.

Applicant must be at least 16 years old on or before June 1, 2018.

Note:  A social security card is required for payroll purposes. 

Note: Must pass required background check (criminal history, physical, TB and drug screen).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of approved water rescue methods and specific medical aid techniques.
  • Able to rapidly learn rules and regulations relating to park and beach activities. Able to exercise tact, firmness, and good judgment in enforcing such rules and regulations. Able to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies and to take effective action.
  • Skill in surf swimming, lifesaving and medical aid.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Able to interact effectively with others.
  • Must be able to relocate to other county locations based on operational needs.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
 
Physical Demands: Very heavy work – Ability to exert 100 lbs of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs constantly to move objects. Hearing, seeing (close up & distance), standing, sitting, shouting, waving arms, running in sand & water, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching and feeling. Ability to swim. and visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception, color acuity) to operate motorized vehicles.
Mental Demands: Concentration on surf. Decisions on proper rescue and treatment.
Environmental Demands: Ability to work in direct sunshine, wind, salt air & saltwater. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including rain, heat, humidity and cold. Exposure to adverse ocean conditions including water temperatures as low as fifty degrees.
