Description

Receives, stores and issues police evidence and found property; and performs other related duties as required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics:
 
This class is distinguished by its highly sensitive work in the receipt, storage and issue of police evidence and found items according to proper legal procedures.
 
This class differs from the Police Evidence Custodian II in that the Police Evidence Custodian I receives, logs, stores and disposes of evidence and other property; whereas the Police Evidence Custodian II supervises and participates in activities associated with the central evidence/recovered property storage function.

Examples of Duties

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

  • Receives a variety of evidence and found property.
  • Checks contents and description of evidence with listing contained in the evidence report.
  • Notifies last responsible officer in the chain of evidence in case of error in identification and/or quantity.
  • Signs for evidence.
  • Tags and accounts for all evidence.
  • Maintains an evidence and found property log.
  • Segregates evidence requiring special handling such as money, corrosive and perishable articles.
  • Classifies and stores evidence for immediate availability.
  • Releases evidence to investigating officer for presentation in court.
  • Notifies owners of evidence upon disposition of the case.
  • Notifies finders of lost property if unclaimed after the required period of time.
  • Transfers money to the Finance Department upon forfeiture of conviction.
  • Stores valuable unclaimed articles for auction.
  • Disposes of worthless articles.
  • Answers inquiries on evidence reporting procedures.
  • Handles communication involving evidence inquiries.
  • Keeps records and prepares periodic reports on operations.
  • Operates a motor vehicle between various subsidiary storage locations within the County.
  • May testify in court to verify the chain of evidence and the condition of the evidence upon receipt.
  • May instruct and supervise police cadets assigned to assist in the evidence room.
  • May be assigned light typing.
  • May assist in the process of abandoned vehicles.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of storekeeping experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property or two (2) years of law enforcement experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property, and some typing experience.

Qualification for Firearms:  Must be qualified to carry and/or possess firearms or ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction. 

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).
 
Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; property identification and characteristics; storage principles and practices; laws, rules and regulations on evidence and found property handling and disposition.
 
Ability to: plan, set up and maintain storage space allotments; work harmoniously with others; operate a typewriter; follow oral and written instructions.
 
Health and Physical Condition:
 
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
