Position Description

APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE ONLYThe Fresno County Sheriff's Office is offering rewarding and challenging career opportunities to experienced Correctional Officers who are interested in furthering their Criminal Justice career as a Correctional Officer III. Successful candidates will utilize their experience in controlling and overseeing activities of inmates detained within the detention facilities of the Sheriff's Office; and performs related work as required.
In addition, candidates will possess the following: ability to establish a tolerant rapport with persons of differing ethnic and socioeconomic background; good oral and written communication skills and ability; maturity, integrity, emotional stability, and good judgment; and ability to work in a frequently hostile, unpredictable, and unpleasant environment.
Note: The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both permanent and extra-help positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
APPLICANTS MUST BE WILLING TO WORK OVERTIME IF NECESSARY AND SHIFTS AS ASSIGNED INCLUDING NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.
As a condition of employment, candidates must undergo and pass a rigid medical, psychological, and polygraph examination, and a thorough background investigation (background materials for failed candidates are retained for three years). Background investigations include employment/credit histories, arrest/criminal records, drug/alcohol use, and personal conduct. This list is neither inclusive nor exclusive; other relevant areas may be investigated and verified.
Fresno County Detention Facilities are "no-hostage" facilities. This means that in the event you are taken hostage, the County will not bargain for your safe release.

Minimum Qualifications
- OPTION 1:
Education: Completion of thirty (30) semester units of course work that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience equivalent to that gained as a Correctional Officer with the County of Fresno.
OPTION 2:
Experience: Two (2) years of United States military service with an honorable discharge.
AND
Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience equivalent to that gained as a Correctional Officer with the County of Fresno.
In addition to the options listed above, candidates must also possess the following:
Age: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent. Incumbents may be required to obtain a valid Class "B" driver's license, or equivalent.
Other: Under California Penal Code Section 831.5, the Correctional Officer III classification is defined as a public officer. Therefore, candidates must be able to meet all pre-employment as well as ongoing public officer status requirements pursuant to federal, state and local legislation.
Note: Incumbents must have successfully completed the training requirements mandated by California Penal Code Section 831.5 (c).

SELECTION PROCESS:
Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:- Written Examination.
- Oral Examination. An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (the employment list established may be extended for an additional 12 months) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
