WE'RE HIRING: LEGISLATIVE ATTORNEY
The Office of Council Services is recruiting for a full-time Legislative Attorney. This is a continuous recruitment to remain open until filled.
Examples of Duties
The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties, if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
- Carries out the functions of the Office of Council Services, including assisting the County Council, its committees, and the Council members in their legislative responsibilities.
- Routine work includes reviewing and analyzing laws, opinions, bills, resolutions, budget documents, contracts, and other documents.
- Perform a variety of research work for the Office of Council Services.
- Staff Council committee meetings.
- Use of current word processing software is required.
- Occasionally, attendance at night meetings and off-island meetings may be required, as well as travel by light aircraft or ferry.
- Moderate lifting, setting up facilities, operating automobiles and use of electronic and sound equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

- Current Hawaii State Bar license
- Strong research and writing skills
- Qualification on a test administered by the Office of Council Services
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license
- Ability to lift equipment weighing 30 pounds

WHO WE ARE
The Office of Council Services provides administrative services to the Council Chair, Council Members and the Council's District Offices.
Staff Appointments
Legislative Attorneys are appointed by the Council for the 2017-2019 Council term, and do not have permanent or civil service status. The term began at noon on January 2, 2017 and expires on January 2, 2019. Legislative Attorneys may be reappointed by future Councils to additional terms.
Salary Range
$61,077 to $119,943 annually, as established by Section 2.08.060, Maui County Code, typically depending on the number of full years that have elapsed since the attorney was admitted to the practice of law in any state or the District of Columbia, as of the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1, 2017).
