Under direction performs work of considerable difficulty in the development, implementation, and management of a disease surveillance system; performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Duties

(Illustrative Only)

  • Contribute to the Coconino County Community Health Assessment (CHA).
  • Provides public health and population data from secondary sources for use in presentations, media releases, program reports, etc.
  • Performs research, analyzes data and prepares reports
  • Reviews complex data and recommends appropriate actions
  • Researches and evaluates evolving techniques and technologies
  • Requests data from state health department when needed and organizes all data appropriately
  • Designs surveys, implements, analyzes, and presents survey results
  • Analyzes trends and provides projections for program planning, evaluation, and development
  • Conducts vulnerability assessments and participates in preparedness planning
  • Assists with outbreak investigations
  • Assists with coordinating related state, federal, and local agencies, clinics, hospitals, and laboratories
  • Assists with response to urgent public health matters (such as a death with fever or a foodborne illness outbreak) during or after business hours,
  • Interacts with physicians, laboratory, staff members and clinical service providers
  • Assists with CCPHSD accreditation efforts
  • Administrative duties, such as purchase card accounting, developing list of projects and workload for epidemiology unit, performance measure reports (for state health department and CCPHSD).
Essential functions of this position include: sitting for desk work; working with and around other staff; repetitive motion (hand-wrist) for computer input; vision-acuity (near) and color vision for computer input; hearing and speech (ordinary conversation) for phones, meetings, presentations, etc; touch (finger dexterity) for computer input.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in epidemiology or closely related field, and 2 years epidemiological experience within the public health area; OR, any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

The ideal candidate will have the knowledge and skills to assume a leadership role when appropriate, contribute ideas and take initiative to seek solutions or make improvements, can articulate and function effectively in the role of an epidemiologist in the context of public health and with internal and external partners, and can work cooperatively in a diverse team.

Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in Epidemiology or Public health, and  2 years of experience conducting community health assessments and/or analyzing epidemiological data.
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of:
- Surveillance program design and management
- Quantitative data analysis, including statistics and/or statistical software
- Research methodology
- Drawing conclusions from data and suggesting appropriate actions, policies, and solutions
- The use of computerized data bases for disease monitoring and trend analysis
- Infectious and zoonotic disease transmission patterns
- Research protocols and statistical analysis
- Biological and chemical agents that might be used in terrorist or emergency events
- Training program design and presentation
- Effective communication skills in public speaking and writing in a way that is accessible to the public and program staff

• Ability to:

- Utilize effective communication skills in public speaking
- Develop and implement specialized programs
