General Description

The City of Green Bay Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department is accepting applications for Playground Leaders.  Playground Leaders are responsible for instructing and providing a specific recreation program, assisting the supervisor with planning and organizing the program, and providing a safe and comfortable environment for the participants.  The pay range is $10.74 to $11.87 per hour.

Examples of Duties

  • Attend Playground New Leader Orientation on June 6, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.(noon).
  • Commit to working the entire ten-week program from June 11 - August 17.
  • Design and direct a comprehensive recreation program which includes low-organized games, special events, arts and crafts, and individual tournament.
  • Assist participants in proper skill development and techniques in sports, games, and motor skill development.
  • Responsible for weekly special event of different themes including decoration, events and related activities, refreshments, and creativity.
  • Integrate and diversify programs so they attract children of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Advertise and promote activities and events through bulletin boards, posters, and word of mouth.
  • Participation in all activities is required. Check lesson plan and activity schedule on a daily basis.
  • Promote and participate in all City-wide events: Talent Show, Kiddie Parade & Karnival, Games Day, Spelling Bee, Sports Tournament, Kid's Day, Wildlife Sanctuary Day, and Track & Novelty Day.
  • Set up a park store with candy, pop, healthy snacks, to sell to the children. The profits are retained by the park and are used to purchase special treats and awards for activities. You must retain all receipts and maintain up-to-date financial records.
  • Open and secure facility daily.
  • Attend all staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Complete all required paperwork, i.e., attendance forms, lesson plans, financial reports, and payroll forms.
  • Responsible for safety and supervision of participants.
  • Report to work at assigned park at designated time.
  • Normal work hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8-10 a.m. and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday.
  • For Leaders who are located at a wading pool park, one Leader will be required to work until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. These hours are in addition to the 32-hour work week and will be paid at a Wading Pool Attendant rate.
  • Be in uniform: playground shirt while on duty; shorts or pants must be appropriate for active wear and in good public taste.  Active shoe wear is required; no open-toed sandals.
  • Proper documentation of emergencies and concerns.
  • Maintain discipline, treating all participants fairly and equitably. If problem is beyond your control, call supervisor or police on park radio. Work cooperatively with police. You are responsible for filing completed Problem Patrol form with supervisor.
  • Cooperate with your co-workers.
  • Remain on playground during scheduled hours.
  • Submit end-of-the-season written evaluation.
  • Be responsible for and maintain City equipment and property.
  • Check for hazardous situations and take necessary action to prevent accidents throughout the day.
  • Keep park shelter area clean and dispose of debris in proper container.
  • Become familiar with and consistently enforce policies and procedures of the department. Read Employee Manual.
  • Report damaged and dangerous situation immediately to supervisors and Park Shop.
  • Be able to work beyond scheduled hours and perform tasks on own time.
  • Follow all procedures of bloodborne pathogens (use of rubber gloves, mask, etc. if necessary).
  • Follow all documentation procedures.
  • Handle concerns in a proper and timely fashion.
  • Secure all equipment.
  • Maintain a positive public image and foster a positive attitude when dealing with the public.
  • Responsible for inventory.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Must have completed at least two semesters of post high school education at an accredited technical college or university.
  • Experience in recreation programming preferred.
  • Ability to work and cooperate with others.
  • Provide proper first aid for minor accidents.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Physical Requirements:

  • Duties characterized as medium work, which is lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Be able to stand and walk for 4-5 hours at a time, sit for 1-3 hours at a time, and drive for less than an hour at a time.
  • Be able to repetitively grasp, manipulate, push, pull, and operate controls.
  • Be able to occasionally climb.
  • Be able to frequently bend, twist, squat, reach, talk, hear, and see.
  • Be able to be exposed to rain, heat, and/or sun 50% of the time.
