Job Description

To operate trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities and perform a variety of semiĀ­skilled tasks in the maintenance of light, street, water, sewer, and storm drainage systems.

Essential Duties

  • Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Operates construction and power equipment.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and cleans equipment.
  • Installs street signs and places pavement markings.
  • Cleans curbs, gutters, and drainage ditches.
  • Inspects curbs, streets, and gutters for necessary repairs.
  • Calculates loads and adjusts to legal standards.
  • Spreads and unloads asphalt.
  • Directs traffic in congested areas around construction sites.
  • Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license and comply with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Performs all On-Call assignments as outlined in the On-Call Schedule and Department policy.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent; and,
  2. One (1) year experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;
  2. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions;
  3. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  4. Ability to observe proper safety precautions;
  5. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public;
  6. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions;
  7. Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions;
  8. Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints
  9. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance
  10. Ability to carry out assigned projects to completion.

Supplemental Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Must have a valid Texas CDL Class A License with Tank Endorsement by date of hire and comply with the City of Killeen driving policy.
  2. Must have or acquire within thirty (30) days from date of hire all National Institute Management System (NIMS) certifications as required by City and position
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including post hole digger, pick-up truck, utility truck, compactor, saws, pumps, common hand and power tools, shovels, radio, needed safety equipment and front-end loaders.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
