Job Summary

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) is currently seeking a qualified, driven and results oriented professional to be part of a talented team responsible for creating and implementing business development strategies to promote the growth of international business in the Pacific Northwest Gateway. This position will be responsible for identifying, developing and managing relationships with assigned customers and prospective customers and keeping Port management informed of significant activities and market conditions.  This position operates cross-functionally with business development team and NWSA operations team as needed and directed.
 

Primary Functions

  • Business Development--Develops and implements strategic sales and marketing plans to retain, expand and secure existing and new container and non-container business including breakbulk, bulk, project cargo or autos.  Forms relationships with Ocean Carrier, Marine Terminal Operator customers and BCO/NVO accounts and other stakeholders in North America with the purpose of growing and diversifying cargo types through the Pacific Northwest Gateway.  Formulates and implements new ideas that promote and strengthen the competitiveness of the gateway and secure new cargo commitments.
  • Business Management--Initiates and assists in implementing actions that improve operational and financial performance of the alliance's commercial business.  Facilitates communication between customers and service providers, NWSA operations team, international ocean carriers marine terminal operatiors and other stakeholders to ensure delivery of quality services and customized solutions.
  • Customer Care and Relationship Management--Builds strong relationships with key decision makers at international ocean carriers, BCO's, 3PL's, stevedores, marine terminal operators, railroads, and other associated stakeholders to ensure customer satisfaction and to leverage new business opportunities.  Recommends and executes follow-up actions that strengthen, build and enhance positive working relationships with the purpose of promoting cargo growth.  Collects and records business & customer intelligence in CRM including customer profiles. 
  • Market Representation--Represents and promotes the alliance at key industry events and trade shows. Gathers and analyzes market trends and customer feedback to help reshape the alliance's marketing and business development plan and to advance the alliance's commercial initiatives. 
  • Project Support-- Assists with development and support of other commercial and alliance projects as needed.   Supports other operational projects and duties as assigned. Must be able to cross function with operations and business development colleagues as directed.  Performs other commercial projects and duties as assigned. Maintains successful inter-departmental relationships necessary for project support.

Required Education & Experience

Minimum education required is as follows:  Bachelor's Degree in business or related field with a concentration in transportation or a related discipline. 

Previous job experience required for this position includes a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible business development experience in sales, operations or marketing positions.  Shipping industry experience working directly with Ocean Carriers, Marine Terminal Operators, BCOs, NVOs, project forwarders, charter vessels or shippers preferred.  Public speaking, report writing, creating and delivering presentations and proposal preparation experience are required.  Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.

Additional Requirements

The desired candidate will have the ability to make transactional and analytical decisions related to research, planning and negotiating, financing and other transactional issues. The alliance is interested in candidates who possess excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.  Must be self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a highly professional team.  The ability to balance the best interests of the alliance and customer plans and strategies is also required.  The ability to think and act creatively in achieving business goals is a key characteristic for success.  Strong written communication skills are mandatory for success, including customer correspondence as well as internal and Commission memo communications. Must have strong presentation skills and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Software including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
