Description
We are accepting applications to fill one (1) part-time (20 hours a week) Public Health Microbiologist position in Santa Barbara.
NOTE: We are also accepting applications to establish an employment list for future Full-Time, Part-time, Extra Help and 1414* vacancies for Public Health Microbiologist in Santa Barbara.
*1414 vacancies may occur as a result of a leave of absence (Civil Service Rule 1414) and the duration of the appointment shall be subject to the return of the individual who is on leave. A person who is appointed to a position under Civil Service Rule 1414 may be able to transition into a regular position in the classification without re-application or re-testing, depending on the performance of the appointee and the needs of the department.

About this position: Under general supervision, the Public Health Microbiologist performs and interprets microbiological tests in the areas of communicable disease and environmental sanitation; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Duties
- Performs laboratory tests in the areas of bacteriology, serology, mycobacteriology and virology.
- Prepares and examines specimens of human, animal and environmental origin to aid in the diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis, Hepatitis B surface Antigen, and chlamydia, food-borne illnesses, animal rabies, tuberculosis and coccidioidomycosis, and other diseases such as plague and diphtheria.
- Analyzes and interprets test data; prepares reports of findings; maintains records of test results.
- Conducts quality control tests to ensure the integrity of tests and compliance with regulations.
- Provides technical information to physicians, nurses, and other clinical laboratories regarding the interpretation of laboratory tests and proper laboratory procedures.
- Utilizes computerized and other laboratory equipment.
Employment Standards
- Public Health Microbiologist certificate issued by the California State Department of Human Services; Or,
- Valid Temporary Public Health Microbiology Certificate issued by the California State Department of Human Services; Or,
- A Certified Clinical Laboratory Scientist General License issued by the California State Department of Human Services; Or,
- A Limited License in Microbiology issued by the California State Department of Human Services.
NOTE: Appointees with a valid Temporary Public Health Microbiology Certificate must obtain a Public Health Microbiologist certificate issued by the California State Department of Human Services within 6 months of appointment, as a condition of continued employment.
Knowledge of: principles of chemistry, biology, microbiology, and physics; state and federal laws affecting public health laboratories; techniques and equipment used to perform laboratory tests; laboratory safety practices.
Ability to: analyze data and draw conclusions; explain technical information; understand, interpret, and apply federal, state, and local laws pertaining to public health laboratories; prepare and maintain records and reports; communicate with medical professionals; learn laboratory computer information systems; operate and care for laboratory equipment; operate a personal computer.Supplemental Information
- Application Review. Review applications to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
- Computerized Competency Assessment: Candidates will be notified by email with instructions on obtaining and taking the Competency Assessment. The deadline will be clearly stated in the email invitation. All candidates must complete both in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
- Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking. Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates' final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified candidates.
Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the supplemental questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.
Incumbents may be exposed to pathogenic organisms, acids, and caustic or volatile chemicals.
NOTE: In order to handle specimens, incumbents must be willing to be immunized against various communicable diseases, including rabies.
Appointee will be subject to a post-offer background check and medical examination.
Appointee must satisfactorily complete a (12) twelve month probationary period.
