Description

This position is open until filled. 

THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT:
Pierce County Parks and Recreation manages over 5,000 acres of open space, trails, developed and undeveloped parks.  We provide recreational programs and infrastructure in active and passive parks and along trails. The department consists of four divisions:  Recreation, Maintenance, Administration and Resource Stewardship. Our mission is to regionally deliver quality recreation opportunities and inviting parks, trails, and open space facilities to the residents of Pierce County.
 

Position Summary

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
See program dates below. All programs work with individuals who have special needs. Club and Camp Pierce participants are 20-30 years old, and Companionship participants are 5-21 years old.

Work full days at the following programs:

  • Club Pierce – a day program that meets every Wednesday and Friday, excluding Pierce County observed holidays, averaging 50 hours per month.
  • Camp Pierce – a six-week long program from July-August, working Monday-Friday, averaging 120 hours per month.
Work partial days at:
  • Companionship – year round special events and classes that meet in the evenings and/or on weekends.

Duties will include:
  1. Assist Coordinator & staff with daily activities, preparation, supervision and cleanup.
  2. Maintain a clean, safe and inclusive environment throughout each activity.
  3. Assist participants with daily tasks onsite and within the community.
  4. Assist with supervision of campers during program activities.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned by the coordinator.
  6. Safely drive Pierce County vehicles, including a 14 passenger van with wheelchair lift (no special license required).

REQUIRED WORK DATES:
  • Club Pierce – Rotating Wednesdays and Fridays, September through June, excluding holidays
  • Camp Pierce – Daily, Monday through Friday, July 9-August 17
  • Companionship – Shifts will vary and will be assigned on a quarterly basis as program needs dictate

Additional dates may be added with expansion of program.

Qualifications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and experience working with people with disabilities in a recreational and/or work setting. Ability to problem solve, work with the public in a tactful manner, and possess organizational skills while remaining flexible. Knowledge and experience working with teens and young adults. Knowledge of recreational activities such as: sports (including but not limited to football, soccer, golf, volleyball, and basketball), games, arts and crafts, music, cooking, first aid and safety. Ability to exercise mature judgment to insure safety and enjoyment by program participants; lead both large and small group activities; maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents and volunteers; follow written and oral directions; shifts vary.
 
EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED, minimum 18 years of age.
EXPERIENCE: Active participation in recreation programming.  Work or volunteer experience with individuals with disabilities in a recreation setting.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATES: Current CPR/First Aid certification required within 30 days of employment.
