Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of General Services, Facilities Maintenance division is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I who will perform maintenance to buildings and grounds. Performs repairs and preventative maintenance to equipment. Performs interior building maintenance. Provides support for special events and exhibits. Performs other duties as needed.

Essential Functions

Department Hiring Salary Range: $27,438 - $31,554

Essential functions include but are not limited to:  
 
  • Performs minor repairs to asphalt surfaces and concrete slabs and sidewalks.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting by removing old paint with chemicals, scrapers, wire brushes, and sanders; filling holes, cracks and joints with putty, plaster, and other fillers; installing sheetrock, taping, mudding, and sanding area.
  • Performs interior/exterior building maintenance by painting doors, windows, ceilings, walls, trim and floors; staining shelves, cabinets, and moldings.
  • Set up/take down extension ladders, folding ladders, and scaffolding to ensure a safe work place.
  • Lay off and paint parking lot lines including handicap spaces.
  • Power washes building exteriors and parking lots as needed.
  • Provides support for special events and exhibits by transporting bleachers and installing/removing temporary fencing.
  • Performs maintenance support for emergency response team which responds for removal of ice, snow and storm debris.
  • Operates forklifts, pickup trucks, and stake body trucks.
  • Keeps paint storage area clean and organized.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

One year of experience as a building helper or apprentice.

Preferred applicant will possess:

  • Ability to read work orders, safety data sheets, and instructional manuals.
  • Perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to write general correspondence and fill out work orders and other items.
  • Ability to use gas and electric airless paint spray machines, power tools, generators, and a variety of hand tools.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment in selecting proper choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures.
  • Comfortable working on scaffolding and ladders of different heights.
  • Ability to work well with others both inside and outside the organization as well as vendors and suppliers.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License.  A DMV transcript is required (obtained within the previous 30 days), at time of interview.
  • May require a Forklift Operator's License within six months of appointment.
Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.  Occasional additional work will be required due to facility emergencies, events and/or contractor work scheduling.

  • Retirement
    If you are hired October 5, 2010 or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.  This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
