Description

Bailiffs are responsible for maintaining peace, order and security in the courtroom by providing assistance to the judge and other courtroom officials and monitoring courtroom proceedings. The starting salary will be $26,686 annually.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintain security by inspecting and securing the courtroom, surrounding hallways and doors, and the judge's chamber before and after court sessions.
  • Maintain order by observing courtroom proceedings to prevent unnecessary disruptions and taking custody of individuals as instructed by the judge.
  • Provide assistance to the jury panel by giving instructions, answering general questions, ensuring no contact occurs with unauthorized materials or persons, and escorting the jury to and from the deliberation room.
  • Provide assistance to the judge and courtroom personnel by reviewing courtroom documents for completion, serving legal papers, and by filing, retrieving and faxing documents.
  • Respond to medical emergencies as appropriate.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to one year of education, training or experience in law enforcement, investigations or corrections or completion of an accredited law enforcement training program or any equivalent combination of education and experience.  Possession of a valid Driver's License.


WORKING CONDITIONS: Extensive walking and standing for long periods, sitting, working in a courtroom environment and exposure to verbal abuse and hostile individuals.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Current CPR (Adult and Child) and AED certification is required within 90 days of employment.  Qualification with the use of a weapon may be required for some positions in this job class.
 

 

Additional Information

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
 
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade.

A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment.

The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing authority who will make the final decision.

All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part time, full time; term or on-call position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be borne by the County.
