The Job
- The Scientific Investigations Division of San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is recruiting for Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists III who is responsible for collecting, documenting, and preserving physical evidence at crime scenes; including fingerprinting, photography, crime scene reconstruction, gunshot trajectories, and bloodstain pattern analysis.
FUTURE SALARY INCREASE
This is the fully qualified working level of the series, under general supervision, incumbents respond to homicides, other major crimes, and collect all forms of evidence from crime scenes.

1) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.
2) Shift: Applicants must be available for all shifts; incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, or be on call for work, on weekends, holidays, and evenings, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination.
3) License: A valid California Class C driver license is required at time of appointment. Employees in this class may be required to use personal vehicles and show proof of automobile liability insurance.
4) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation, and the incumbent can expect to work rotating, night, weekend, day, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends. Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists who are on call must be able to report for duty within one hour after being paged.
5) Physical: Incumbents must be able to climb up and down embankments, and hike short distances over rough terrain, while carrying up to 40 lbs; work in inclement (hot/cold/wet) weather; and be able to work while wearing an Air Purifying Respirator (APR).
6) Medical: Incumbents must pass a yearly medical exam to verify the ability to wear an APR.
7)Training: Under general supervision, incumbents respond to homicides, other major crimes, and collect all forms of evidence from crime scenes. Minimum Requirements
Option A - Experience: Three (3) years of full-time work experience with a law enforcement organization responding to homicides and other major crimes; collecting all forms of evidence from crime scenes; performing duties including fingerprinting, photography, crime scene reconstruction, gunshot trajectories, bloodstain pattern interpretation and other technical duties as a field specialist in either crime scene photography or evidence collection and documentation.

Experience: Two (2) of full-time work experience as a Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist II with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, including qualification by the San Bernardino County Scientific Investigations Division in Advanced Crime Scene, Gunshot Trajectory Reconstruction, and Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

Option B - Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in criminalistics, forensic or police science, or a related physical or natural science, which includes at least 9 semester (12 quarter) units from courses in crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and college-level mathematics (trigonometry is preferred). A list of coursework must be submitted with the application.
