Construction Specialist

This position performs technical and professional services in regard to the rehabilitation and construction of new housing for the citizens of the City of Savannah.

Inspects existing construction for rehabilitation requirements, including housing code violations; performs other approved inspections as directed.

Inspects new construction for new development and in-fill housing requirements including standard building code; performs other approved inspections as directed.

Requests and reviews land surveys for site work and assists in building layout.

Prepares work write-ups, specifications, cost estimates, architectural drawings, work specifications, and cost certifications.

Takes photographs of projects before, during, and after.

Coordinates the bid process including bid reviews.

Prepares construction documentation to include all contracts.

Oversees construction projects including approval of progress and financial draw requests.

Meets with contractors, owners, and developers to discuss rehabilitation and new construction projects; mediates conflicts between owner, contractor, and developers; certifies contractor credentials.

Prepares and reviews all environmental issues ensuring compliance with EPA, HUD, OSHA, state, and federal requirements.

Prepares reports and memoranda.

Performs general administrative tasks, such as answering telephones, taking and relaying messages, filing, and copying.

Coordinates logistics for volunteer organizations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree in Construction, Architecture, or Historic Preservation; with three years of experience in architecture or construction, to include estimating, drafting, and review of building codes; or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. May require specific SBCCI certification or Lead Assessor/Supervisor Certification; or must obtain certification within six (6) months of employment. Must possess a valid driver's license.

Work Location: 5513 Abercorn St.  ;  Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.  The final score on this examination will consist of a rating of education and experience, plus veterans' preference points, if eligible. The names of all competitors rated eligible for appointment will be placed on the proper register according to their final scores.
