Description
- The City of Norfolk's Department of General Services, Facility Maintenance division is seeking to hire an Operating Engineer II who will be responsible for maintaining heating and cooling systems. Directs various personnel and contract workers. Performs other duties. Operates and maintains automated building control systems. Receives and processes service requests. Monitors and maintains video surveillance systems.
Essential Functions
- Department Hiring Salary: $34,445 - $39,612
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Maintains heating and cooling systems by conducting preventative maintenance, changing filters, and checking bolts, pulleys, motors and pumps.
- Operates and maintains automated building control systems by monitoring system performance, implementing program changes and coordinating repairs for non-operational portions of the automated control systems.
- Oversees operations by regulating energy consumption, managing boiler and chiller systems, and performing load shedding functions.
- Receives and processes service requests by making decisions to repair or replace failed components based on knowledge of equipment.
- Monitors and maintains video surveillance systems by inspecting video security cameras and associated multiplexers and recording equipment and performing repairs and new installations.
Education/Experience
- Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Two years experience.
Two years experience in HVAC and/or automation control installation and programming in HVAC energy management systems, access door control systems, fire alarm systems, video surveillance and recording equipment, or elevator monitoring equipment. Additional Information & Requirements
- Valid Drivers License required. A DMV transcript is required (obtained within the previous 30 days), at time of interview.
- Plumbing and Piping, Heating and Air Conditioning, or Mechanical Certificate may be required within six months of employment, depending upon work location.
Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, rotating shifts to include weekends will be required. Evening shifts may be required. Occasional overtime work will be required due to facility emergencies and/or venue scheduling.

- Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010 or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
