Basic Function
- Inspects, maintains, repairs, and overhauls steam and diesel locomotives, gas and diesel generators, passenger coaches and other related equipment as required.
Nature & Scope
- Under general supervision of the Roundhouse Mechanic Supervisor, typical duties and responsibilities include:1. Assists in performing preventive maintenance inspections on locomotives and passenger coaches and related equipment.2. Diagnoses malfunctions, services and repairs locomotive and train systems, including but not limited to brakes, electrical, cooling, fuel, exhaust, power train, suspension, and HVAC systems.3. Performs major and minor overhaul of steam, gasoline and diesel components. Performs chassis repairs.4. Uses various hand and power tools and standard and specialized test equipment in the execution of service and repair procedures.5. May be required to move the locomotives for maintenance and fueling reasons by using a front-end loader or similar device.6. Assists or works with other mechanics in performing complex repairs.7. Responds to track calls and makes repairs in the field.8. Installs special equipment such as is necessary to the improvement and safety of the train.
9. Other duties as assigned. Required Skills
- High school or GED. Requires 3 years experience in the repair and service of locomotives, or automobiles, or trucks or heavy equipment. Must pass criminal background check and have or obtain a Texas Class C driver's license within 30 days of hire. Welding, plumbing and electrical knowledge helpful.Knowledge of Federal, State and local environmental laws and regulations applicable to locomotive and equipment standards; knowledge of the safety standards for passenger trains and related equipment; knowledge of Federal railroad inspection standards; knowledge of the methods and procedures used in servicing and repairing steam, gasoline and diesel equipment; knowledge of vehicle and equipment mechanics, including internal combustion engines and hydraulic and electrical systems.
Skill in communicating orally and in writing; skill in operating a variety of equipment used in railroads, maintenance and repair functions and operations; skill in operating a two-way radio; skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools used in the repair and servicing of mechanical equipment.
Ability to identify abnormal readings or trends in data collected from gauges, meters, dials, instruments, etc., according to established formats; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to diagnose defective operations and excessive wear on mechanical equipment parts and components; ability to diagnose complex repair needs of railroad equipment; ability to determine functional interrelationship of parts within a mechanical system; ability to interpret technical reference manuals.
