Click Here to Take the Realistic Job Preview Test!The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications from qualified applicants to train as E-911 Public Safety Telecommunicators for answering, processing or dispatching both emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and radio responses for law enforcement, fire rescue, emergency medical services and other related public safety services. This position will be responsible for specialized work on an integrated multi-line telephone system, computer aided dispatch (CAD) system and public safety radio communications system.
NOTE: Telecommunicators work rotating 12 hour shifts, holidays, weekends and emergencies. Mandatory overtime may be required if deemed necessary. Shifts rotate from day to night every four months, or depending on the needs of the organization. All applicants are subject to a preliminary background check including criminal history and employment, and may be disqualified at any point in the selection process.

Qualified applicants will be contacted via email to schedule a date and time to take a computerized skills and abilities "CritiCall" pre-employment test. Testing will be held at the VCSO Communications Center at 3825 Tiger Bay Rd., Daytona Beach, FL 32124.
Phase II: Testing & Interviews
Interviews will be held for applicants who successfully passed the "CritiCall" examination and preliminary background investigation. The "CritiCall" test requires a minimum passing score of 80% for non-data entry categories such as decision making, memory recall, map reading and reading comprehension. The data entry section of the test has two categories; audio and visual. The passing average is 3600 KPH (Key Strokes Per Hour).
Phase III: Selection
Applicants selected to move to the final stage of the selection process will be required to complete the comprehensive background investigation, Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA), and medical evaluation.Illustrative Duties

Level I- Receives academic instruction in the policies and procedures of public safety dispatch via a standardized training program pursuant to FS401.465 in preparation for State of Florida certification examination; receives instruction and certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD).
- Performs Call Taker tasks which include: Operation of a telephone console having several trunk lines and a number of extensions; teletype machine, and computer terminals.
- Answers all incoming calls and makes proper connections or referrals. Receives calls for service or assistance of a routine and emergency nature and follows prescribed procedures in the handling of the calls, obtaining information and routing the information to the proper person.
- Records information (incoming and outgoing messages) obtained via telephone and/or other sources (teletype/computer) from the public on the appropriate forms.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, and Local ordinances.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Level II- Practical application of radio dispatch procedures. Ensures responsive communications flow between other sections, division, or departments to achieve the objective of public safety operations.
- May be assigned to Fire/EMS (TAC) or Law Enforcement (ADMIN) discipline.
- Performs all duties assigned to Level I.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Level III- Performs all duties assigned with Level I and Level II.
- In accordance with department policies and procedures, receives and dispatches emergency calls on primary radio channels to the appropriate service provider.
- Dispatches all requests for Law Enforcement, Fire/EMS assistance, pick-ups, instructions, information, related messages and other communications to field units as required.
- Immediately notifies field shift supervisor and communications supervisor of any incident involving damage to department vehicles or equipment, injury or death of department members or any other type of call of consequence.
- Upon request of competent authority, broadcasts description of wanted persons, property, special attention notices, weather bulletins, fire forecasts, etc.
- Monitors all radio frequencies. Properly answers mobile units or other agency calling them. Relays important information to appropriate channel operator.
- May serve as assistant shift supervisor. May make oral and written reports as required. May be responsible for the communications operation in the absence of the Telecommunicator Supervisor.
- May function as communications training officer (CTO.) Assists and instructs subordinates on unusual or exigent situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age; and possess a High School Diploma or Graduate Equivalent Diploma (GED).

- Level I
- Knowledge of a wide range of telecommunications equipment that includes telephones, 800 MHZ voice and data radio communications, teletype, field communications, and computer aided dispatch (CAD) system. Working knowledge of policies and procedures relating public safety communications. Knowledge of Federal Communications Center (FCC) rules and regulations applying to telecommunicator's responsibility.
- Able to receive FCIC/NCIC certification within six (6) months of hire date. Able to learn and use FCIC/NCIC and CJIS systems. Able to communicate clearly and concisely with public, coworkers and other agencies including distraught individuals.
- Able to take and pass state certification examination within one (1) year of hire date.
- Able to meet State of Florida applicant requirements pursuant to FS 401.465.
- Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Able to work under stressful conditions.
- Able to interact effectively with others.
- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
Level II- All KSAs of Level I.
- Able to learn and use proper radio language, procedures, codes and signals. Able to utilize such language, procedures, codes and signals at all times. Able to analyze a situation accurately and take or suggest an effective course of action.
Level III- All KSAs of Level I & II.
- Able to learn all duties and procedures of a primary radio.
ADA Requirements
Physical Demands: Sedentary work. Able to see, hear, talk, sit, reach, grasp; finger dexterity. Able to tolerate long-term sitting and use of CRT screen. Able to work rotating day/night shifts every four (4) months or rotate depending on the needs of the organization. Able to work 12 hour shifts.
Environmental Demands: Inside work.
Mental Demands: Able to read and comprehend technical and professional journals, manuals, procedures and instructions; maps, layouts, memos, summaries, reports and evaluations. Able to perform basic mathematical functions. Able to write compound sentences relaying information, data and details. Able to speak clearly and concisely. Able to comprehend and use radio codes and designations.
