Description

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to prepare a non-certified applicant (Police Cadet) to receive the necessary training and education through The Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training (Police Academy) to become a prospective Police Officer. The Police Academy prepares the cadet to become an entry-level law enforcement officer in the State of Florida. Employees in this classification perform practical skills and simulated activities that complement the classroom instruction. This minimum standards program is regulated by the Florida statutes and is a highly structured and disciplined program. Upon successful completion of the Basic Training Program, a cadet is eligible to take the Florida Department of Law Enforcement State Officer Certification exam.

Examples of Duties

Cadets are to attend all required courses at the Police Academy. While at the Police Academy, Cadets are supervised by Academy Staff and required to perform any related duties the Academy deems necessary.

Cadets are required to complete and achieve a passing score on the following courses which total 770 hours of instruction (courses are subject to change per Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission):

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED, an evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required; supplemented by completing and achieving passing scores on the Basic Abilities Test for Law Enforcement (BAT), passing a physical fitness ability test (Basic Motor Skills), Swim Test, and successful completion of background investigation.

Special Requirements
  • Minimum age of 19 years.
  • United States Citizen at time of application (F.S.S. 943.13(2)).
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement as an adult.All candidates must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation (F.S.S. 943.13).
  • If ever arrested, candidates must submit an official court disposition with the application.Official court dispositions can be obtained from the Clerk of the Court in the county in which the incident occurred.
  • MUST successfully pass the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT or FBAT), Basic Motor Skills Test and swimming test prior to submitting an application.
