Purpose
This position is responsible for the operation of assigned heavy construction equipment.
Essential Job Functions
Operates and maintains heavy motorized equipment.
Moves, dirt, gravel, rock, sand, and other heavy materials.
Pushes, compacts, and covers refuse.
Grades soil to cover refuse.
Screens soil and other debris and grinds bulk items.
Operates roll-off container truck to support transfer station as needed.
Inspects equipment before use to ensure necessary repairs are made.
Inspects job sites for possible hazards.
Responds to customer inquiries and refers customer complaints to supervisor.
Ensures proper equipment maintenance; performs minor repairs as necessary.
Supervises Maintenance Workers as assigned.
Installs erosion and sedimentation control devices.
Responds to after-hours emergencies as needed.
Monitors landfill operations and reports problems to management staff.
Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; with three years of heavy construction equipment operation and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess a valid commercial driver's license.
Additional RequirementsBackground investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; a motor vehicle report will be conducted, and driving history must meet the standards outlined by the City of Savannah; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment. The final score on this examination will consist of a rating of education and experience, plus veterans' preference points, if eligible. The names of all competitors rated eligible for appointment will be placed on the proper register according to their final scores.Additional Information
