Overview
Employment Status: Part-time, Per Diem Temporary Appointment.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Occasional evenings, early mornings, and late clinic hours may be required). Also includes work at Palm Desert Campus.

Under the general supervision of the Psychiatrist, Student Health Center Director, Counseling and Psychological Services Director and Medical Chief of Staff, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner performs assigned medical psychiatric treatment activities.
- Incumbent will in collaboration with the Psychiatrist, and following the established Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner protocols, the Psychiatric NP provides direct therapeutic services in the form of diagnostic assessments and medication treatment for individuals as assigned by the Student Health Center Director, Counseling and Psychological Services Director, Medical Chief of Staff and other SHC Providers. The Psychiatric NP will be part of the interdisciplinary team, advising and making recommendations of the students' overall treatment plans.
- Incumbent will be responsible for maintaining client records in accordance with established policies and procedures, the established Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner protocols and perform other duties as assigned within the scope of Psychiatric NP practice.
- Incumbent will in collaboration with other clinicians, the incumbent will develop, maintain, and monitor a clinical case management system to provide continuity of care and follow-up for higher-need clients. The incumbent may collaborate with a case manager or social worker, and may be called upon to write letters or complete forms for academic accommodations through the office of Services for Students with Disabilities as indicated.
- Incumbent will initiate and develop on-going liaison relationships with community health providers, services, hospitals, and other resources. Develop and maintain a database of referral resources and services in surrounding communities
- Incumbent will as determined by case management demand, provide direct time-limited therapy, group therapy, and outreach services.
- Incumbent Act as a consultant to assist providers and counselors with daytime and on-call crisis services. Consult with faculty, staff, students, and family members, who are concerned about a student, while protecting patient confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications
Nurse practitioner with a minimum of three to five years of psychiatric experience in an outpatient setting. Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nursing Practitioner Program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing care principles, methods and procedures. Ability to work independently in assigned specialized area according to broad guidelines and practices established by a physician; ability to conduct diagnostic examinations and to treat both chronic and episode disorders; ability to assess patient needs and recommend next steps; ability to observe and record unique symptoms and behaviors; ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
REQUIRED:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Prescriptive authority issued by the California State Board of Nursing.
- Current DEA registration.
- Ability to maintain certification as required by regulations as needed to perform specific job duties (e.g. Basic Life Support Certification [CPR]).
- Adult, family practice and psychiatric care experience, with experience in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and mental health related illness.
- Commitment to illness prevention and a wellness model of healthcare delivery
- Ability to operate diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment, electronic medical record software, Microsoft Windows applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective service-oriented relationships with all customers (e.g. students, faculty, staff, outside agencies, regulatory representatives, vendors, and the community) and provide exceptional customer service.
- Ability to create and maintain a challenging, innovative, positive work environment.
- Ability to select, provide lead work direction to, train, and evaluate clinical and paraprofessional staff.
- Ability to perform a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that includes evaluation of mental status, current and past history of violence, suicidal or self-harm behavior, substance abuse, level of functioning, health behaviors, trauma, sexual behaviors and social and developmental history.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills (e.g. presentation and public speaking; writing daily correspondence, policies, procedures, reports and related documents) with the ability to communicate with internal and external customers.

- Synthesizes, prioritizes and documents relevant data in retrievable form.
- Plans and assumes responsibility for the clinical management of patients with urgent mental health and psychiatric health related illness in accordance with established protocols and standardized procedures.
- Provide triage assessment and crisis intervention.
- Uses a problem oriented format to document patient information in the chart.
- Assesses the impact of acute and/or chronic physical illness, psychiatric disorders, and stressors.
- Interprets EKG's, labs and XRAYs and indicated.
- Consults with the physician as indicated in established protocols and for those conditions which lie outside the NP's individual competence.
- Functions as a mentor and resource for Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants and Clinical Assistants to ensure quality of care standards are maintained.
- Collaborates with other health disciplines in providing care and treatment (e.g mental health, etc.). Interprets policies and effective use of all services offered by the Student Health Services to students and other university and community personnel. Makes referrals to outside agencies when appropriate.
- Works cooperatively with Student Health Center's staff in providing quality patient care.
- Understands, supports and complies with the policies and procedures of the Student Health Center (SHC) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
- Actively participates in quality improvement activities within SHC and CAPS as assigned e.g.: in-service education, established meetings, committees, patient education activities and programs to improve the level of care provided in the Student Health Center.
- Participates in peer review.
- Actively participates in problem-solving within the clinic as well as the organization.
- Meets as needed with the physicians and other providers for chart review, problem-solving, and education.
- Duties and responsibilities may be added or deleted, as the job necessitates.
- Master's degree or above.
- Current Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Board Certification.
- Three years post graduate Psychiatric and Mental Health experience.
- Supervisory and leadership experience.
- Experience working with an Electronic Medical Records System (EMR).
