Description
- Under regular supervision, inspects, cleans, maintains and repairs the City's water distribution and wastewater collection systems and related appurtenances. Performs maintenance and repairs observing all safety precautions as required. Employees in this class typically operate a variety of tools, vehicles and equipment to accomplish duties. Work usually requires maintaining close engineering tolerances. Performs related duties as directed.
Examples of Duties
- Engages in daily water transmission and distribution and wastewater collection system maintenance.
- Operates tracked and wheeled earth-moving, excavating and other related equipment such as Trenching Machine, combination backhoes with hydraulic loading lift and backhoe digging shovel, skid steer loaders and dozers.
- Operates and maintains a variety of equipment such as motorized vehicles, trailers, power tools, plumbing tools, pumps, generators, jet rodder, jet trailer, pressure cleaner, valve exercising machine, torches, etc.
- Drives vehicle to worksite unless it is transported in other vehicle and make setting of the attachments if required.
- Performs operations as loading earth, gravel or other loose materials onto trucks, smoothing and packing road rock on excavation sites or pipe installation projects, and installing valve boxes.
- Transports construction equipment; performs operator pre-checks on equipment; checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems and makes necessary minor adjustments.
- Inspects, cleans, maintains and repairs water transmission and distribution and wastewater collection systems and related equipment according to prescribed standards and codes.
- Performs a variety of technical and maintenance duties, including but not limited to installing, maintaining and repairing water mains and sanitary sewer systems; installing and maintaining new service lines, fire hydrants, water meters, water main valves and intakes and related installations.
- Locates all valves, including air release valve in water mains prior to required repairs. Repairs valves, operates de-watering pumps and makes service taps.
- Excavates earth manually surrounding jobsite prior to repairs and servicing as needed.
- Diagnoses system failure correctly.
- Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools; complies with City maintenance and operational procedures; adheres to OSHA and other regulatory agencies policies; ensures that fellow co-workers are employing appropriate safety measures and are in compliance with safety rules and regulations.
- Performs minor maintenance on equipment and tools.
- Purchases equipment and supplies adhering to the City's purchasing Policy.
- Assists other utility crews as required.
- Tests City water for Chlorine Levels.
- Trains Utility Service Worker I's and crew on safety, proper repair techniques, and restoration and city policies.
- Responds to after-hours emergency calls; responds as a member of the severe weather/hurricane response crew.
- Updates prints, diagrams, maps, and similar documents including as-built.
- Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including HTE work orders, location reports, activity reports, mileage logs, safety reports, etcetera.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as City supervisors and employees, engineers, contractors, and utility customers.
Minimum Training and Experience
- High school diploma or GED, supplemented by up to two (2) years previous experience in water or wastewater system maintenance, plumbing, utilities construction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience operating backhoe and installing water main pipe is preferred.
Special Requirements- Must possess a valid State of Florida CDL "B" Driver's License or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
- Maintenance of Traffic (MOT Certification) - Basic or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire
- Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Water Distribution System Operator Class 3 License or a Florida Water and Pollutions Control Operators Association "Class C" Certification in Wastewater Collections
Must obtain within two years from date of hire:- Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Water Distribution System Operator Class 2 License or a Florida Water and Pollutions Control Operators Association "Class B" Certification in Wastewater Collections
Marginal Functions
- While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
Assists with inventories.
Performs minor office functions such as answering phones and copying.
Performs related duties as required.
