Description
Under general supervision the purpose of this position is to protect life and property from fire or fire related danger, provide emergency medical services, and operate/maintain fire vehicles and apparatus. Employees in this classification perform skilled, protective work. Position is responsible for extinguishing fires, rescuing persons and property from danger, operating fire vehicles, and performing salvage and related follow-up work. Performs related work as directed.
Examples of Duties
- Responds to emergencies with a fire company or rescue unit, and answers medical emergencies as part of an engine company.
- Removes, extracts, and rescues persons from danger, recognizes acute symptoms requiring immediate care and administers life-saving rescue procedures to injured or afflicted persons.
- Connects hose to hydrants and pumps; joins hose sections and connects nozzles to hose; connects to standpipes and sprinkler systems where applicable; enters burning buildings with or without hose lines; operates nozzles and sprays water, foam, and/or other specialized control agents as applicable.
- Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment in extinguishing fires; raises and climbs ladders; works from aerial apparatus where applicable; ventilates burning buildings to remove smoke and gases.
- Performs salvage operations including sweeping water, removing debris, and placing smoke ejectors.
- Interacts with, and delivers information to, the public during emergency situations.
- Makes daily inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects; performs cleaning and maintenance tasks in and about assigned station.
- Aids in the mitigation of other emergencies as directed by supervisor.
- Attends training sessions in firefighting methods, equipment operation, rescue procedures, hazardous materials mitigation, and related subjects.
- Recognizes hazardous material situations; makes identification of unknown substances through the use of specialized testing equipment; sets up decontamination procedures; assists agencies in the removal/disposal of hazardous material.
- Conducts station tours; provides public information.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED; or other certificate of competency.
Special Requirements- State of Florida Firefighter Certification
- State of Florida EVOC Certification
- State of Florida Driver's License
- State of Florida EMT Certification (within 3 months of date of hire)
- State of Florida Paramedic Certification (4th semester paramedic students may apply; with documentation from school)
- Current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support Card (ACLS)
- Valid Broward Fire Academy County-Wide Physical Ability Test or equivalent (includes swim test)
- Review of application based on education, training, and experience as requested in the application; application reviews may include background checks and driving record.
- Candidates with complete applications will be scheduled for a practical examination to evaluate knowledge in this field of work. The practical examination consists of both medical and fire skills and shall comprise 50% of the final score. Each portion of the practical examination must be passed with a 70% score for qualification for the oral interview. The two passing scores from the practical portion will be averaged to come up with the 50% of the final score for the practical portion. Results of the oral interview shall comprise the other 50% of the final score. Both scores combined (oral and practical) shall comprise the total final score based on 100%. The rule of three scores will then be applied for interviews for candidates who have met the qualification requirements and passed the examination process.
