Description

Under general supervision, the fire inspector will independently perform fire inspections of commercial occupancies, of which a majority are considered high-hazard occupancies including but not limited to institutional facilities such as hospitals, jails, and skilled nursing care facilities; large public assemblies with occupant loads of 300 or more; factory and industrial facilities; facilities with special processes such as spraying or dipping processes; and high-piled storage as described in the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code,  applicable local ordinances, and additional State mandated programs. Performs required field test of fire alarm/extinguishing systems as described in appropriate code books.  Provides technical assistance to the Deputy Director of commercial plan & fire inspections in matter of code enforcement. Employee must exercise tact, courtesy, diplomacy, and firmness in contact with the general public.
 

Qualifications

An associate's degree or equivalent is preferred in fire science/technology/protection/engineering, building design, construction, fire/business, public administration, or related field, plus one year of responsible experience performing fire prevention related work, plan review, construction, and/or building inspection.

Must possess a minimum of a probationary Level III Fire Inspector from the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board.  Must possess a Standard Level III Fire Inspector certification from the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board within one-year of employment.  Ideal candidate would also possess Standard Level III Electrical Inspector certification or have the ability to obtain a Standard Level III Electrical Inspector certification the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board within two years of employment.
