The Position
The City of Berkeley is accepting applications on a continuous basis for Lateral applicants who have completed the Basic POST Academy and applicants who are current Police Officers or have been a Police Officer within the last three years.
The City of Berkeley Police Officers perform a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and testimony, problem solving, and providing information and assistance to the public; and performs related work as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Police Officer is the full working level class in law enforcement, performing all duties required to effectively respond to and resolve the normal scope of peace officer situations encountered. Incumbents may be assigned to patrol, traffic, detective, crime prevention or other police-related functions depending on rotational assignments. This class is distinguished from uniformed non-sworn police-related classes by designation and the responsibilities and authorities associated with designation as a sworn peace officer under the laws of the State. It is further distinguished from Police Sergeant, which both supervises and participates in law enforcement activities."Required Qualifications
- Education
Equivalent to graduation from high school and completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter units of college coursework in police science, public administration, psychology or a related field.
Aside from having to meet the above requirements, California Government Code requires graduates of non-U.S. high schools to have passed a GED test, or possess a 2-year college degree. Defense Department high schools are considered U.S. high schools.
At the time of appointment, candidates must:- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Be a United States citizen or a permanent-resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
- Pass medical and psychological tests and meet vision/color standards. (Vision 20/100 correctable to 20/30.)
- Possess a current, valid California Driver's License
Experience
Police Officer Lateral I:This is the academy-trained level, which is conferred upon successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy. Academy graduation must have been within the last three years.
Police Officer Lateral II:This is the experienced level for candidates who have a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate and have successfully completed the probationary employment period with a law enforcement agency in the State of California. The employment must have been within the last three years.
Background CheckMust be able to pass the background check, which includes the verification of education, employment, military, criminal history, civil litigation, credit history, DMV records and personal history. Knowledge and Abilities
Note: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Class Characteristics.
Knowledge of:- Basic law enforcement terminology and concepts;
- Techniques for dealing with people of all socio-economic levels under hostile and emergency situations;
- Observing and accurately recalling places, names, descriptive characteristics and facts of incidents;
- Remaining and controlling own emotions in tense situations;
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work;
- Reading, interpreting and applying complex laws, procedures and policies;
- Making rapid, sound independent judgments within legal and procedural guidelines;
- Preparing clear and concise reports, records and other written materials; and
- Understanding and following oral and written directions.

Application Review and Information
All application materials will be reviewed, and those meeting the minimum requirements will be placed on an employment eligible list.
Successful candidates will have their names entered on an Employment Eligible List which will be used by the Personnel and Training Office of the City's Police Department to conduct final selection interviews.Eligible candidates must submit a POST personal history statement in order to be considered further during the hiring process. The best qualified candidates will be contacted by the Police Department for a background investigation. The background will include the verification of education, employment, military, criminal history, civil litigation, credit history, DMV records and personal history. Personal contacts will be made with relatives, friends, neighbors, landlords, employers and other associates. Candidates selected for a background investigation will be required to submit to a computer voice stress analysis test as part of the background investigation process.Upon a conditional job offer, candidates will be scheduled for medical and psychological evaluations. The medical includes pre-employment drug screening. The employment offer is contingent upon successful completion of these evaluations.
