Typical Activities

Under the general direction of the Director of Services to Students with Disabilities this position will lead and coordinate individuals providing sign language interpreting/ transliterating, real-time/remote captioning and other related support services for students, staff and guests of the campus who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or deaf-blind ("consumers"). In addition, the incumbent regularly performs interpreting/transliterating services for the campus community.
Lead work involves assigning and scheduling interpreters and captionists ("service providers") for campus-related needs taking into consideration the consumer's needs and preferences and the service provider's skills; arranging for substitutes; orienting and training new staff interpreters; evaluating the skills of interpreters; coordinating with outside vendors to supplement services; monitoring service providers on technical matters; reviewing and verifying service providers' timesheets; assessing need, recruiting, and hiring service providers with assistance from the Director and Human Resources; serving as a resource to service providers on confidential, sensitive, and complex assignments; assisting with updating service provider guidelines and policies; verifying contract invoices and submitting to Director for approval; and maintaining contact with local, regional, and national interpreting/captioning agencies, as well as professional organizations of each to enhance recruiting and keep abreast of industry standards. The incumbent may be required to work weekend and evening hours as directed and provide services both on and off campus.

Minimum Qualifications

In addition to the education and experience required for the Interpreter II, the Lead Interpreter requires a broader acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four-year college or university in order to effectively understand student needs in various university settings and ensure effective delivery of interpreting services. Candidates must have sufficient experience to demonstrate skills and abilities necessary to provide lead work direction, including effectively evaluating the capabilities of interpreters and a working knowledge of real-time captioning services and service provision coordination. Two to four years of relevant experience is required.

Certification Requirements:
Must possess and maintain skills certification in both interpreting and transliteration from National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or possess and maintain National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Advanced Certification issued by RID or comparable certification.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
