Description

Under the direction of the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Administrator and the SELPA Manager, as a member of the Visual Impairment Program of Foothill SELPA, the Braille Transcriber prepares braille transcriptions required by elementary and secondary level students with visual impairments who need to access educational materials in alternative formats.
 

RECRUITMENT WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF QUALIFIED APPLICATIONS ARE RECEIVED. RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME.

CURRENT VACANCY: One part-time position (9.25 mos./yr., 6 hrs./day), in the SELPA office at the Administration Center. Position includes benefits for employee only.

Examples of Duties

Operate computers utilizing specialized software and other braille devices to transcribe a variety of elementary and secondary level instructional materials into braille for use by students with visual impairments.  

Adhere to techniques, standards and procedures set forth by the Braille Authority of North America, National Braille Association and the SELPA.  

Prepare transcriptions utilizing textbook formatting rules, literary Braille Code, and/or Nemeth Code.  
 
Design and produce tactile graphic representations of print material.

Work closely with certificated staff to ensure that materials are prepared appropriately and accurately for students with visual impairments.

Maintain and monitor recordkeeping systems and files to include inventory for Braille/ large print materials and K12 textbook orders in various formats and conduct research for additional sources of instruction materials for students with visual impairments.
 
Attend workshops, conferences and other meetings as required.

Perform other duties, as assigned.

Employment Standards

Minimum requirements:

Education:

Possession of the Certificate in the Nemeth Code for Mathematics or successful completion of the National Braille Association's Textbook Format Course with Final Exam.

Experience:

Two years of experience of acceptable level and quality transcribing Braille and preparing materials for students with visual impairments.
    
Any other combination of education, training and experience that could likely provide    the desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and the use of personal transportation. Also, ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates, and maintain insurability.

Desirable:

Written and oral proficiency in an additional language.

A review of applicants' education, experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of top-qualifying applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the District will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination will utilize Assessment Center techniques, which may include a technical project, and will include a technical qualifications appraisal interview. Qualified candidates will be provided with more details prior to the start of the examination process.

Salary: Salary amounts listed above indicate the first and last step of the range for the position. New employees start at the first step of the salary range.

Probationary Period: 130 days of paid service.
