Description

Manages all activities and personnel of the Adult Services department relating to technology, programming, collection management, and resources and services for adults and teens.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under the general supervision of the Deputy Director, manages the day-to-day operation of the Adult Services department; responsible for creating a climate of welcoming and responsive service for customers of all ages; supervises, trains, and evaluates professional and support staff; serves as a member of the library's management team.

Examples of Duties

• Incorporates innovative ideas and problem-solving skills to build partnerships, reduce barriers, and provide outstanding programs, services, and resources for library customers.

• Provides reference and reader's advisory services to customers; serves as a model for staff in those interactions

• Oversees planning and execution for programming, including educational, cultural, recreational, and technology-based programming, for adults and teens

• Addresses questions and concerns from customers

• Works with community groups and local schools to promote and coordinate library services and outreach

• In the absence of administration, in charge of the building in matters pertaining to security and customer service

• Develops procedures for tasks, makes schedules, and reviews work assignments

• Monitors and coaches employee performance; conducts performance appraisals for Department staff

• Communicates library policies and procedures to staff; implements and assures compliance

• Prepares the budget for the Department, and ensures that the Department operates within the parameters of its budget

• Attends various staff meetings; serves on various staff committees

Requirements

• Knowledge of public library practices pertaining to services to adults and teens

• Knowledge of and experience of technology, including e-resources and devices

• Ability to coordinate and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines

• Demonstrated ability to apply initiative and exercise good judgement

• Proven leadership qualities that foster teamwork, effective communication, and high morale

• Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate effective library services

• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills

• Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion

• Satisfactory criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening

Acceptable Experience and Training

• Master's of Library Science from ALA-accredited institution

• Three years of public library experience with adults

• Extensive experience with automated library catalog and circulation software

• Experience with Word, Excel, and other application software

• Proven supervisory experience

• Some knowledge of Spanish is helpful

• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
