Description

The City of Norfolk's Public Library is seeking candidates for the position of Library Aide at various locations. The Library Aide is responsible for assisting patrons and supporting the operations of the Norfolk Public Library system. Work involves assisting patrons with signing onto computers, printing from computers, locating, removing, and replacing materials on shelves, demonstrating discovery of digital resources, and performing other duties as required.

Norfolk Public Library became the first free public library in Virginia in 1904, and its collection includes classic and popular items from the late 19th century to today. Essential Functions

***The departmental hiring salary for this position is $7.55 per hour.***

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Assists library patrons with catalog, copier, and printer.
  • Locates materials on shelves.
  • Provides verbal directions and instructions to patrons.
  • Sorts, files and replaces library materials alphabetically and numerically using call numbers (Dewey Decimal system classification).
  • Assists patrons in the use of library computers.
  • Assists patrons with email, Microsoft software, Norfolk Public Library system databases, mobile device use, and the Internet.
  • Loads, unloads, and transports materials using a book cart.
  • Understands verbal and written instructions; communicates effectively with others and uses email communication efficiently.
  • Uses facsimile, printer, and copy machines.
  • Collects payments from patrons.
  • Performs assigned duties as required.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Six months of clerical and/or customer service work is required.

 Abilities Required Include:
  • Lift from the ground to above the shoulder.
  • Push, pull, bend, and stoop.
  • Reach shelves from floor level to approximately 5 feet high, using step stools in narrow aisles.
  • Stand for extended periods of time (up to six hours).

The preferred candidate will possess some college course work and possess library experience. In addition, the preferred candidate will possess a proficient level of computer skills.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work hours: Up to 20 hours per week, Sunday through Saturday, with some evening and weekend hours as needed.

  • Retirement
    If you are hired October 5, 2010 or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.  This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
