Description
- Receiving Applications for Part Time Employment Applicant PoolUnder general supervision, performs skilled and technical work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and administering appropriate emergency medical care to patients on-site and while in route to hospital. Employee must exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public. Employee is responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but must exercise considerable independent judgment in assessing the condition of patients and applying short?term relief. Employee is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue and extrication, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases. The employee reports directly to an EMS Shift Supervisor.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Responds to emergency calls as a paramedic; performs necessary rescue work and administers emergency medical care per ALS protocol.
- Responds to non-emergency calls, such as requests to transport patients from hospitals to their homes or from local medical facilities to a specialized medical center.
- Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical clinical work and ambulance service and operation; maintains knowledge of new or modified operational protocols and procedures; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.
- Maintains competency in trip report writing, computer skills and literacy; this includes Microsoft Windows operating system and software related to the Windows operating system, i.e. (Word, Excel, ESO EHR)
- Inspects, tests, and inventories ambulances and their emergency equipment daily, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes ambulance and equipment daily; ensures that they are in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments; records all of the above and reports other than minor defects for specialized attention.
- Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical facilities and mobile units as scheduled or needed.
- Provides assistance to members of volunteer emergency service organizations in County, as requested.
- Provides educational presentations related to EMS, and Emergency Disaster Preparedness as requested, and train / instruct new hire employees on ambulance and shift operations.
- Prepares and reviews all necessary records and reports.
- Performs other related work as required.
- Maintains EMT-Paramedic and maintains ACLS, PALS, and BTLS certifications, or equivalent.
Typical Qualifications
Graduation from high school and some experience as an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. National Registry preferred, but not mandatory.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Certification by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic and has possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. Please reference Scotland County Emergency Medical Services System plan regarding any additional specific certification requirements.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Very Heavy Work.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants. Must be able to communicate with both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, which convey both ethical and positive reinforcement and attitude to the listener.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, logs, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, logs, records, etc., using prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people in clear, concise and informative manner.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical terminology and emergency response codes.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using emergency medical equipment and hand tools.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as emergency medical equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via a telephone and two-way radio.
